Hardwicke to direct 'The Monkey Wrench Gang,'

"Lords of Dogtown" director Catherine Hardwicke will next direct "The Monkey Wrench Gang," based on Edward Abbey's anti-establishment classic of the same name, reports Production Weekly. The story concerns an eccentric bunch of saboteur environmental warriors who cause havoc and mayhem against builders and other developers in southern Utah.The Monkey Wrench Gang was written in 1975 by Edward Abbey novel, followed the exploits of folks willing to go to great extremes monkey-wrenching the works to save the planet from eco-catastrophe. Scribe William Goldman wrote one draft of the script. Goldman also penned "Heat," "Marathon Man," "All the President's Men," "The Princess Bride," and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Not too shabby. Edward Pressman and Columbia Pictures are the producer and studio involved so far. Publication of Abbey's novel in 1975 gave rise to the phenomenon of Greenpeace styled eco-terrorism and protest.The film is currently in pre-production, with filming due to start in May, at several locations across New Mexico, not Utah.
