Chinese box-office picks up in '06

Despite a proliferation of pirated, inexpensive, widely available DVD’s, more and more Chinese are going to the movies.

In 2006, Chinese box-office rose by nearly one-third to US $336 million compared with $256 million in ’05 according to the official government org. the China Film Bureau.Director General of the Bureau, Tong Gang said that improved distribution and addition of 366 new screens last year helped increase box-office performance.According to Tong, a “Cinema Law” has been drafted to help boost the film business in China.China Film Bureau vice president Zhang Hongsen, said that the Bureau considered support for small -medium-budget films essential for growth of the industry adding that his office would explore "more opportunities and methods of filmmaking with producers of these smaller-budget films."Largest grossing film in China in’ 06 was the US $45 million epic ‘Curse of the Golden Flower’ helmed by Zhang Yimou.
