You have hit the nail on the head mate. Without Peter Jackson and his team, the LOTR would have been an utter failure at worst, medicore at best. There is simply nobody else who can compare.

Many people in the film industry are well aware of the money grubbing and book cooking that goes on in the upper levels of the movie industry ( its no different than what goes on in the music industry ). It matters not that PJ has reaped an enormous sum of money from LOTR, what matters is the fact that New Line needs to be fully observant of its contractural obligations, period.

Resolve it and get on with it New Line.

PJ and team are the only ones who can pull it off. It makes me shudder that LOTR could have turned into another Harry Potter had it been helmed by a different Director.
I think back to the Academy Awards when LOTR sweeped the Awards Ceremony. I've never seen so many fake smiles from the audience. I'm from N.Z so we watched it all.
At the start of the ceremony everyone was really applauding, but then later on in the night when LOTR kept on winning the smiles were really starting to slip. Coincidentally a time later Academy Award Winner Kathy Bates made a public statement declaring that all Major Motion Movies from U.S Studios be made in the U.S. Sour grapes maybe...

all that has happened is the peter Jackson has applied good old kiwi fair play and integrity to their accounting practices basically he is holding them to account

new line is running for cover in case the true depth of their malfeasance is uncovered

with Americans penchant for civil action the results if shown in the true light of day could cripple them

I for one am pleased that Jackson is out of the Hobbit picture. What he put into the trilogy probably couldn't have been achieved by any other director. But what annoys me immeasurably is the travesty of his being allowed to depict hobbits with those ghastly outsized clodhoppers for feet. It's a gross injustice to JRRT's intent, and has no basis whatsoever in the books.

No film company in their right mind should ever allow Jackson to direct another movie based on a book again.

Yes, a funny one.

The Hobbit will be a very different film to make - it's a very linear story-line and it's only one film (or is it two now?!). So I don't think that it is actually as dependent on the production company for success. Meaning, I don't think it's as crucial that PJ and crew are involved - it won't be breaking new ground like LotR did.

Having said that, a lot of the fans would be *very* disappointed if someone else was to direct. PJ is obviously the best person for the job - he brings the name and experience and essentially, an industry. I don't see Weta being involved without Peter.

My guess, is that NL will never get it off the ground before the license expires and it will then be sold to a company that will use PJ. Or NL will fire Shaye and patch things up with the director of their biggest money earner.

This whole spat just makes NL look bad. Shaye's argument is effectively 'We've given you heaps of money, now go away'. PJ has been quite explicit that he just wants the books done properly - and fair enough.

I quite agree that Peter Jackson is the man to make the Hobbit. Other directors may give it their best shot, and other Hobbit films may be produced without Peter Jackson. But I for one (and no doubt many others) will wait until NL's time runs out and someone else picks up the rights and hires Peter to make the film. After the Hobbit, I'd like to see Peter work on the Silmarillion.

Threats made to Tolkien relatives

AN IT technician has been charged with making threats of violence and extortion to relatives of Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien.

Christopher Carrie, 63 from Solihull and author of www.jtolkien.com, will stand trial later this year on four counts of threatening behaviour and one count of extortion. A further allegation of a breach of the peace has been dropped.

Mr Carrie successfully sued the Catholic Church in 2001 for abuse he allegedly suffered whilst within their care. Although the church did not admit liability, Mr Carrie was reportedly paid a five figure sum.

A spokesperson for the Tolkien family declined to comment.

The last posting (Christopher Carrie Mar 18:18:40) did not come from me.

I have not been charged with anything and incidentally I have never been an IT technician.

Whoever posted it could show the veracity of what they are saying by including the link to the Ananova report. Of course they haven’t done that because no such report exists.

I wrote my book that it may give a better understanding of child sexual abuse. I want nothing from the Tolkien family and have never in the past asked them for anything. Fr John Tolkien was a predatory pederast who sexually abused myself and many of my contemporaries when we were children.

You don’t have to be guided by bullshit and spoilers go to my web site jtolkien dot com read it, compare what I say with what has been reported around the world and make your mind up.

Re: Royd Tolkien: 10 Facts about Christopher Carrie

As the only other victim of 'Father' Tolkiens's sexual abuse who has gone public I can confidently say that there is not a shred of truth in the outrageous claims you make about Chris Carrie. Your ridiculous charges should help enlighten other readers as to the Tolkien attitude to the truth.

Sooner or later the story of the numerous victims of Tolkien's predations will reach the light of day. The investigating officers in Birmingham have indeed confirmed that in spite of the veiled terror hinted at by the Church and the Tolkien Legal apparatus victims numbering in 'double digits' had come forward and are on record. Of course with the subsequent disgraceful resolution by the Crown Prosecutor Service in the UK it is doubtful whether any others will risk going public. For why should they leave themselves open to the wrath of the Tolkiens and their legal muscle, funded ironically by the profits from - childrens fantasy fiction!

Readers may find some balance against your attempts at disinformation at the Sunday Mercury, the only UK publication, and a small local one at that, that had the courage to go up against the Tolkien $$.

'Damages' paid in Tolkien caseJul 20 2003
Martyn Leek, Sunday Mercury

'The Catholic Church has paid substantial damages to a Midland man who claims he was abused by the priest son of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R.Tolkien.'

Sex inquiry Tolkien son diesJan 27 2003
By Staff Reporter, Birmingham Post

'The eldest son of The Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien has died at the age of 85.

Father John Tolkien, heir to the multi-million family estate, died after a 50-year career with the Catholic church in the Midlands.

He had been the subject of a police investigation into allegations of sex abuse against young boys during his time as a priest.'

It was solely by dint of the inherited wealth of the Lord of the Rings fortune that Tolkien was able to employ expensive legal muscle to delay the course of the law right up to the moment when the CPS decided not to prosecute on the basis that this would not be 'in the public interest' since Tolkien was by now unable to stand trial for 'medical reasons.'

[URL Removed]

The 'public interest' provision of the CPS mandate is only ever invoked when there already sufficient evidence to indicate that a prosecution would in all likelihood be successful.

The sparsity of reporting on the whole affair can be confirmed by a Google search. The exception was a brave local newspaper The Sunday Mercury:

[URL Removed]

For its pains, the Mercury was eventually castigated by the Press Council for intruding on the 'privacy' of the Tolkien family. To this day, not a single UK publication has come to its defense.

John and myself had lunch in Santa Monica LA and therefore the suggestion in the last post purporting to come from John Harlow-: is crap!

It has been some time since I visited this thread. I am not in the least surprised however at the volume of 'dirty tricks' postings coming from what is obviously the Tolkien camp. All reasonable people will immediately conclude that only an enduring sense of guilt could possibly fuel such activity.

But surely they must know that sooner or later given the growing public awareness on the question of child sexual abuse that more of John Tolkien's victims will take their experiences public.

What a sorry family that chooses to protect itself by visiting further suffering on the already victimized.

Authors Philip Pullman-Quentin Blake,Anthony Horowitz and Michael Morpurgo object to vetting to safeguard children's safety. A bit rich and totally irresponsible in consideration of celebrity criminal abuse of children in the past.

The same parallel as with the introduction of Identity Cards ‘If you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to fear’ springs to mind.
Children’s safety and well being is paramount and any measure to secure that position stands above any other consideration.
Philip Pullman, the best selling author, will be banned from reading his books in schools because he refuses to be vetted for a new anti-paedophile database that he said 'assumes my guilt'.
Mr. Pullman and others should accept; history demonstrates paedophiles don’t necessarily come in the guise of ‘the bogeyman’ or any obvious profile.
Witness reports of pop stars, churchmen and youth leaders convicted of paedophillia on predatory worldwide scale.
For too long children have been sorely neglected by assumptions and complacency, 'Any person who is in a position to exploit relationships with children has to be checked out.' This should be accepted as the norm and anyone taking the views of these individuals should rightly be kept out.
As a victim of childhood sexual abuse perpetrated by my much celebrated parish priest I believe I have a better knowledge of the reality.
Any measure introduced that saves just one victim is worthwhile, indignity should quite rightly not stand in the way of progress when it comes to stamping out generational child sexual abuse.
Long overdue well done the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA)
