Rob Cohen is in talks with Universal Pictures to take over as director on the third installment of its "Mummy" franchise, reports Variety.
The juicy details are still under wraps by "Mummy 3" writers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, but the film is in active development and Universal plans for a 2008 release.
Rumors are circulating that "The Mummy" leads Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz may well return to reprise their roles.
The first two "Mummy" films released in 1999 and 2001, according to Variety, tallied a worldwide gross of $849 million.
Producing "Mummy 3" are Sean Daniel, Jim Jacks, Sommers and his Sommers Co. partner Bob Ducsay.
"The Fast and the Furious" and "The Skulls" was directed by Cohen. He also directed "XXX" for Revolution and "Stealth" for Sony, reported Variety.
Last year Universal purchased Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy 2" out of turnaround from Sony and Revolution, which is in pre-production and shooting in Budapest.
