There comes a day when you cannot even believe what you are reading anymore, and that day is here for me. The very fact that "The Birds" is "being developed by "Transformers" and "The Island" Michael Bay makes me weep in my coffee. What is next? Kevin Smith remakes "The Godfather" with Silent Bob as Jason Mewes consigliare ? The new "in development" Birds is a new movie and like the 1963 original, will be based on the short story by Daphne du Maurier .
"The Birds" original film starring Tippi Hedren is a true classic and has held up beautifully, so why re-invent the wheel? Well, if you can cast reigning scream queen Naomi Watts, perhaps those with short memories or under the age of 25 will flock with their shekels in hand to see this "original." Naomi has not been confirmed - yet. But the word on the street is she'll be the one to fill those Tippi- toed shoes. For those of you who might be unaware, the original film featured beautiful blond Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren ) who rides into Bodega Bay in pursuit of eligible bachelor Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), she is attacked by a seagull. One turns into many, as suddenly thousands of birds are flocking into town, mass preying on children and residents. Don't ask Hedren about her thoughts in this news. "The "Birds" remake is an insult," says Tippi to the Times Online.com. ''It's appalling, I find it so offensive. To take a work of art like that and try to copy it is like trying to imitate the Mona Lisa." Both Universal Pictures and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company have been developing a remake of the Alfred Hitchcock suspense classic "The Birds" for well over a year now. They are allegedly eager to take the next step in the development process and attach a star. According to TMZ .com, Universal is poised to make an offer to Naomi Watts to star in the film.TMZ also claims that screenwriter Leslie Dixon has come on board the picture. Hedren opined her view on current film makers to the Times Online: "I think Hitch would call them tiny tots trying to make movies and ask why they don't have an original thought in their heads," Hedren said.
