Update: Indiana Jones 4 project moves forward

By Stone Martindale Jan 3, 2007, 14:52 GMT

Honest Abe can wait according to various industry trades this morning.  "Indiana Jones" talk is gaining real momentum with word that the Lincoln biopic that had actor Liam Neeson attached being pushed, in lieu of developing the Jones juggernaut for a tentative June 2007 production start.

Steven Spielberg has been reported by Variety and other trades as postponing directing the Lincoln project.  Spielberg says that "George, Harrison and I are all very excited. We feel that the script was well worth the wait. We hope it delivers everything you'd expect from our history with Indiana Jones."

George Lucas has mentioned they are writing Sean Connery's role of Jones' father in hopes the Scottish acting legend will agree to join the cast.

Screenwriter David Koepp, who worked with Spielberg on "War of the Worlds" and "Jurassic Park," also wrote the screenplay that made the grade with both Lucas and Spielberg. An earlier screenplay by Frank Darabont had been rejected.

The usual suspects will be producing. Executive producers Lucas and Kathy Kennedy joining producer Frank Marshall with Lucasfilm Ltd., and Paramount Pictures will distribute worldwide.

Pre-production offices will open in Spring, with production said to commence in June with a May, 2008 release planned.

Yes, by requiring them to attend weekly church services. Not only will they improve their morality, they will have the chance for immortality.......

There were quite a few spelling mistakes in this fairly short article. Perhaps Stone Martindale should have asked Santa for a spell checker?

That said, I DO appreciate the news scoop -- keep 'em coming, Stone...

Nate you have to keep drinking from the coup to stay immortal . You dont just take one drink and live for ever. Pay attention to the film next time rookie.

They've been claiming that this movie is 'in the works' since 1989, when Last Crusade hit theaters. Every 4-6 months there is 'news' that a screenplay has been approved and the trio is just waiting on one person's schedule. Yeah right. I'll hope it's true, but I won't hold my breath.

As long as George Lucas doesn't do any of the writing on this project, it should be good.

But if they don't get Sean Connery back as Indy's dad, it won't be worth seeing. Sean Connery rocks!

Maybe ** YOU ** should pay a bit more attention to the movie. May I quote:

KNIGHT
'You have chosen wisely. But the
Grail cannot pass beyond the
Great Seal. That is the boundary
and the price of immortality.'

The knight said that the cup could not cross the seal; the movie never makes mention if one drink or constantly drinking from the cup is requisite for immortality. However, the implication would be that since you must remain with the cup; you must continually drink from it.

I just saw the movie over the weekend. They cannot take the grail out and kept immortality. However, earlier in the movie they talk about the three knights who came out of the desert after 150 years or something like that. While not immortal, Indy and his father would be given long lives. (So that could put the setting of the next Indy movie in modern times?)

Reference is made to the Grail itself which fell down the crevice not to the results of having drunk from the cup. If interpreted in the fashion of the quote it would imply that after drinking from the Grail it and the drinker could not pass the Seal and then indie and Dad would not have been free to leave the cave. An ambiguity was left that will need to be addressed.

If Connery doesn't come back please eliminate the father from the movie. Who is the mystery daughter and who was her mother?

Meaning, the cup cannot leave. It can't pass the seal. So, to stay immortal, you have to stay with the cup (and keep drinking it). Since it can't leave, to stay immortal, you can't either.

I was little when this movie came out and I understood it. I didn't think there was much room for interpretation, people.

Are they kidding!? Or just bored? Have they really run out of ideas or is it just because of the revenue potential? I find it difficult to comprehend why such great minds would toil in such a mediocre landscape while there are still so many fabulous stories yet to be told. Perhaps it's time to run a national competition for story lines that are submitted to a central 'story repository' from which moderators pass on the ones they think are the best. Get your kids thinking America! Inspire them; give them some meaningful, passionate, uplifting, spirited content…or…is that it? Perhaps this is the very reason why the mass is becoming the media.

Guess it’s exciting for them. Yet, don't be fooled. Can’t anyone remember the enormous hype surrounding GL’s Star Wars Episode III and what a complete and utter letdown it was? Not that this next installment of the Indiana franchise will be similar.

Anyway, all the best boys.

//Well, there was the Young Indiana Jones series--perhaps that's the history they have in mind.//

'We hope it delivers everything you'd expect from our history with Indiana Jones.'

It's the use of 'our' history that seems odd.

Their personal history in respect of the film is the result, not the experience. And the result for them was that it generated enormous revenue.

So who exactly are they making this film for and why? For the fans? Is there a site I don't know about where millions of fans are screaming for another installment?

OUR - pronoun, nominative I, possessive my or mine, objective me; plural nominative we, possessive our or ours, objective us; noun, plural I's.

– pronoun 1. the nominative singular pronoun, used by a speaker in referring to himself or herself.

– noun 2. (used to denote the narrator of a literary work written in the first person singular).

3. Metaphysics. the ego.

Nate, perhaps you should consider looking a little deeper into the motives behind the need these people have to create another fictionalized product.

The truth is in the revenue and I'm over the representation that it's for supposed entertainment purposes.

As I said, these great, creative minds are actually missing the opportunity to use their collective skills, talents and superior craftsmanship to generate content that matters in this time in [our] history. Or have they given up and reverted back to a 'bread and circus' mentality?
