Oscar swag give-aways over, whistleblower Edward Norton

killjoy US actor Edward Norton....he is still a monster talent!! EPA/ANGEL DIAZ
There'll be no super cool gift bags, otherwise known as "swag" at the Oscars or Golden Globes, courtesy of altruistic Edward Norton.
The awards have nixed giving the bags, sometimes worth $100K or more, because the Illusionist star allegedly complained so much that the IRS poked their nose in.
The talented actor, Norton, told New York magazine: "Picking through $35,000 gift baskets is disgusting and shameful. My suggestion was to have the Academy commit to [charitable] contributions in the name of the winners."
TMZ speculated that Ed just may be "sitting alone during this year's festivities." Hollywood celebrities will be in for a shock when they attend this year's Oscars without the lavish gift baskets given to them in previous years. No word either on the effects on the massive cottage industry of marketing, publicists and consultants used to place and procure the luxe freebie goodies in these elaborate gift-y bags.
The decision comes after The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences and the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agreed to send tax forms to all those who received the free gifts, worth around $100,000, at the 2006 ceremony. IRS Commissioner Mark Everson says, "Whether you're popping the popcorn, sitting in the audience or starring on the big screen, you need to pay your taxes. There's no red carpet loophole for the stars."
The 79th Annual Academy Awards will air on Sunday, February 25, 2007.

I love Ed Norton-good for him
good for edward norton!! he seems like a cool, nice guy!
I think Edward is real cool to stand up for something like this....It's true that these international celebrities have no lack of material luxuries, so why not do something nice and meaningful for millions of under priviledged people?
Hollywood should have more charitable people like Ed norton.
What a self-righteous jerk.
Don't feed the trolls.
Good for Ed Norton. If other celebs decide to take it on him, they should be thrown into a stock and caned publicly. Hmmm...I hope Kiera Knightly is mad... :)
Awesome. I know the 'stars' get stuff for free because it's a cost-effective way for companies to advertise, but honestly, it is a little sickening to see them get all of that stuff they didn't earn for free when it seems that many of them are far-left liberals who support the forced redistribution of wealth. I most assuredly don't support forced redistribution of wealth, but I do support charity, which is the elective redistribution of wealth. Therefore, I find it sweetly ironic that the 'stars' are up in arms about having some of their 'star welfare' redistributed away from them. Talk about a taste of their own medicine.
ED NOORTON IS AN ASSHOLE! HE HAS COST HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE PROFITS AND LIVLIHOODS! WHY IS HE NOT CONCERNED WITH HIS $5,000,000 PLUS SALARY?? HES A JACK OFF AND I WISH HIM ALL THE BEST WHEN HES UP FOR AN OSCAR!! NOT!!!!
ROCK ON ED! NOT ONLY ARE YOU A FINE ACTOR (AMERICAN HISTORY X, FIGHT CLUB, PRIMAL FEAR, THE BLUE VEIL, ETC.) BUT YOU ARE A STAND UP GUY...KEEP GIVING TO BALTIMORE...ROCK ON AGAIN!
Thank God for Edward Norton.
The idea of giving thse lavish gift to people who are in no need to insane.
A fellow Maryland product!!!

That's what I'm talkin' about!! Let the stars go buy their own trinkets,
toys and gewgaws! Or better yet...have the poor and underprivileged present the awards and give THEM the gifts!
I've been saying the same thing for years...people should stop watching these celebrations of wealth and entitlement until the 'stars' get in touch with reality. Very fortunate people to be living at a time in history where performing arts are way, way over compensated.
You are the man, Edward!
Ed Norton is my hero!
good for edward norton. I agree with him, I think that it makes a lot more sense that the money spent on those gift bags be given to a charity. I'm not sure if this has been said, but edward norton donates a lot of money to different charities and helps out a lot with a bunch of them.

Good for Ed Norton . . . if we have to pay taxes, so should they.
