The Off Broadway, Tony award winning ‘Doubt’ is going to be brought to the big screen by Miramax and Scott Rudin (executive producer ‘The Queen,’ ‘Venus’).
Rudin has tapped playwright John Patrick Shanley to write and direct while he will produce under his Scott Rudin Productions shingle.
No talent has yet been cast.
Pulitzer Prize winning ‘Doubt’ is set in 1960’s in a Catholic school. A nun confronts a priest after suspecting he abused a black student. He denies the charges but the play, which had only four characters, has much of the dialogue center on themes of religion, morality and authority.
Shanley has already expanded movie to include black character and others while filming in many locations around New York to capture a greater feel of the city.
Shanley is best known for "Moonstruck," which he wrote, and "Joe Versus the Volcano," which he wrote and directed.
Daily Varity quotes Shanley saying of his new assignment, “The world of these nuns is very recent and yet utterly gone," he said. "The way they eat, they way they live. It's very exotic."
