South Korea and France sign co-production agreement

South Korea entered into its first co-production treaty October 27, with a treaty signing in Seoul.Under discussion since 2003, the treaty allows for Korean-French co-productions to qualify as local films in both countries allowing them to tap into public sector funding and to fulfill screen and TV quotas.South Korea has cooperation agreements with Canada and New Zealand but nothing as comprehensive as with the French. France has audiovisual co-production agreements with more than 30 countries.Taking time out from the treaty signing, French culture minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres presented Korean director Lee Chang-dong with the Legion d’Honneur – the highest award presented by the French government.Formerly South Korea’s minister of culture Lee won best director award at Venice International Film Festival in 2002. He is presently in production on his fourth film ‘Secret Sunshine.’
