Aug 10, 2006, 23:43 GMT
Los Angeles - A young South African with a growing reputation as a high tech cinematic wizard has been chosen to helm the movie based on Microsoft's bestselling Halo video game, it was announced Thursday.
Neill Blomkamp will be making his feature-film directing debut after earning raves last year for his short film Alive in Joburg, a futuristic commentary on apartheid in South Africa where aliens have become refugees.
According to Xbox.com he was personally chosen for the job by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, who is the executive producer of 'Halo.'
'Halo' will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand - to take advantage of Jackson's state-of-the-art Weta facilities there - and will see a worldwide release in the summer of 2008.
