“Holy Brokeback Mountain, Batman – it’s Ennis Del Mar as the Joker”

By M&C News Aug 1, 2006, 22:20 GMT

“Holy Brokeback Mountain, Batman – it’s Ennis Del Mar as the Joker”, was what folks from the WB should have announced the other day.

That’s right, Academy Award © nominated Heath Ledger has been tapped to play the Joker in 'The Dark Knight,' the sequel to last year’s 'Batman Begins.'

Christian Bale will again star as Batman, and Christopher Nolan will return as director, Warner Bros. studio announced Monday.

Ledger has some big shoes to fill as Jack Nicholson last played the Joker in 1989’s Michael Keaton starred ‘Batman’ which was directed by Tim Burton.

“Our challenge in casting the Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless,” Nolan said in a statement issued by Warner Bros. “Watching Heath Ledger’s interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s Batman is going to be incredible.”

'The Dark Knight' is set to begin production next year.

I'm sure this Joker will be totally different from Nicholsons. This one will be darker, more like the Joker from the comic books. I don't think the two will be very comparable, no more than Mark Hamill's Joker could be compared to Nicholsons.
