Da Vinci Code takings in Britain and Ireland short of record
May 23, 2006, 18:48 GMT
London - The Da Vinci Code movie has taken 9.5 million pounds (17.8 million dollars) at box offices in Britain and Ireland within its first three days of release, falling well short of record takings from previous blockbuster films.
According to box office company Nielsen EDI, the figures rank The Da Vinci Code at number 15 on the all-time list of the most successful opening weekends.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which made 23.9 million pounds when it made its debut in 2004, holds the record.
Up until now, Ice Age 2 remains the top film of 2006, taking 275,000 pounds more than The Da Vinci Code in its first weekend.
However, the film took 119 million dollars in ticket sales around the globe between Friday and Sunday, according to studio estimates - putting it second on the all-time international list.
In the US and Canada, The Da Vinci Code raked in 41 million pounds in its first weekend - the 13th highest opening takings in North American film history.
It also easily eclipsed its box office rivals in Britain and Ireland over the last weekend, with Mission: Impossible III a distant second with 1.8 million pounds.
