Chinese producer Terence Chang, long time collaborator with Academy Award winning director John Woo, announced that the Chinese epic movie ‘Battle of Red Cliff’ will be released before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Chang is quoted as saying: “This movie is government backed. The (Chinese) Government is taking it seriously because they want us to release it before the 2008 Olympics.”
Woo is slated to direct with the movie a co-production between his Lion Rock Productions and the State owned China Film Group.
‘Battle of Red Cliff' is set in China's ancient "three kingdoms" period in the third century, when China was split into three rival states.
Based on the classic Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," this US $50 million project will be a dramatized retelling of an historical event, the Battle of Red Cliff (A.D. 208), during which two warlords Liu Bei and Sun Quan, jointed forces to defeat a much stronger warlord Cao Cao.
While no talent are fully attached, Hong Kong stars Chow Yun-Fat and Tony Leung are said to be circling the project.
Woo plans to starting filming in March 2007.
