Jasmine Women finally gets release

The Ziyi Zhang ('Memoirs of a Geisha', '2046') starrer “Jasmine Women’ (‘Mo Li Hua Kai’) shot in 2003, by cinematographer and second time director Hou Yong, will be released on the Chinese mainland April 25th. Due to conflict of interest among rights owners, the film's domestic and international releases were put on hold for more than two years.Asian Union Film & Media has since bought the rights from other investors according to Dong Ping, head of distribution for the company.In 2004, 'Jasmine Women' won the Grand Jury Prize at the 7th Shanghai International Film Festival and for her role in the film Zhang Ziyi was named the Best Actress of the 13th Golden Rooster Awards of China.Arclight Film’s new Asian film Easternlight division will act as sales agent for all territories including China. However the decision to preem the movie over the long May holiday week in China is being questioned because of the congested slate of movie openings during that period.Exhibitors in Shanghai are bulking at preeming “Jasmine” which will compete with seven other openings. The movie is the tale of three generations of women starting in 1930’s Shanghai. The movie’s action takes place in Shanghai and much of the dialogue of the film is in the dialect of that city.It is being reported that the pic will be released in Japan and Southeast Asia in May and in Europe and the U.S. over the summer.
