Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in the epic action-adventure Superman Returns, a soaring new chapter in the saga of one of the world’s most beloved superheroes. Marking an increasing marketing effort, the cat is out of the bag that WB's 'Superman Returns' helmed by Bryan Singer will be released, same "day and date" (30 June USA) in 3D exclusively on IMAX's 70 mm big screens.
News was first released during the Giant Screen Cinema Association confab at Universal City, Hollywood CA back in March but studio execs have been rushing to ratchet up the film to meet 3D format technologies.
'Superman Returns' will be the world's first live-action Hollywood feature to be converted from 2D to IMAX 3D.
Will this be the answer to getting Hollywood out of the doldrums represented by the 9% drop in ticket sales last year?
That remains to be seen.
However it will be difficult to assess the success of the 3D venture and track IMAX box office receipts as the studios do not lump them in with regular screen totals and the independent organization that used to track giant screen totals - no longer does so.
'Superman Returns' stars newcomer Brandon Routh as an estranged Man of Steel who revisits Earth following a lengthy absence and discovers that mankind - and his beloved Lois Lane - may no longer need him.
Kate Bosworth plays Lane and Kevin Spacey IS Lex Luthor, the arch enemy of Krypton's Superman.
