Haha, Tdavis. I quote-
'Actuall you spelled it wrong it is spelled plagiarized, but anyway. He stole a lot of the plot design from Star Wars. He used Similar names from LOTR, on Characters that had similar roles from LOTR. The Hype it gets will eventually bite him in the ass when someone who actually watches the film and sees their work being plagiarised. I hope he gets sued and am amazed no one has yet. Probably the only reason why is this is viewed as the childrens book, most adult readers don't know of the book unless they are parents.'
'...when someone who actually watches the film and sees their work being plagiarised.' You write that it is spelled plagiarized, but then it as plagiarised yourself? *raises eyebrow*
Christopher has created a masterpiece, the likes of which I have never seen. Both Eragon and Eldest have a certain thing to them that makes them more realistic than most other fiction novels. Christopher's style makes the reader feel as if he or she were right in the middle of the whole thing. This is a tremendous story and I recomend you read it.
Although this novel is impressive in flow and force of the narrative plot, I was still disappointed in the trite characters and trivialities in certain magical situations. It cannot be denied that the plot does mirror star wars. I think this review from USA Today (and quoted from answers.com) very accurately sums up the main problem with Eragon.
...'A servant of an evil emperor attacks, with an army at his disposal, a convoy bearing an object of power to a rebellion against the Empire. The servant captures the convoy and its leader, but the leader (a princess, no less) sends the object away in hopes that it will fall into the hands of a wise old wizard, who is the last of his kind. The object is found by a poor farm boy, whose family (not parents but uncle) is killed as a result, leaving him nothing to stay behind for. He joins the wizard on a quest, as well as a rogue who has no love for the 'empire.' They save the princess, then the three flee to the rebels. This could be used to describe the first Star Wars movie, and no one would know the difference. In Eldest, there are also obvious plot similarities to the second Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back, as the farmboy leaves the rebels after they have just fought a costly battle to train with a wise old hermit in a forest. He trains and undergoes a life changing experience, and later participates in another great battle. He duels with an enemy only to get beaten, and learns a terrible secret about his family (Father/Brother and Father)...'
Despite its unoriginality, the author should be applauded for creating a novel that the beginning or young fantasy reader could fully enjoy. Personally, having read too many other fantasy novels very similar to Eragon dimished its effect for me, and, for some passages, it felt like regurgitated Tolkien or McCaffery or LeGuin.
I thought he graduated from highschool(when he was 15). Do you mean he never went inside the building? Well anyways, I dont really give a f***(just bored), highschool sucks balls anyways. Hooray for him.
I thought the name 'Eragon' sounded familiar, but I didnt really care, as I don't now. Well, so this plagiarism bit thats been talked about... There are many fantasy stories including dragons, magic, knights, swords, not to mention elves and fairies. Thats just the way it is. People are captivated by these ideas, mythes, and for some people religiously(or just their culture) the real thing. So many people write about them, and a lot of people have their own stories based on them. Its just a matter of getting it out, maybe even published. Which he did, and that's my point. Don't say he copied, if he did it would never have been published, and there wouldn't be confused and silly people making these comments. If you don't like it, just be glad it gave you something to do, i.e. reading and posting your opinion.
You know, it's great that people express thier ideas thorugh these, it's not great that all you see are critics bickering with zealots... For those who don't like the series fine, you can talk with each other and hate the series. However; as in one post I read, it is true that with modern sci-fi/fantasy it is hard to write a novel where your ideas do seem just like someone elses who has written such material before you. Remember that when authors write they take the best of whichever works they enjoyed the most and throw them all together and create a plot with characters and a story line. Having Eragon seem alot like other books isn't filtching or thievery of ideas, its saying that this particular author enjoyed the writing styles of those predecessors who went before. So instead of being a cynic and shooting down every idea that tries to take off, find a series or novel that you enjoy, and comment on it instead of everything you hate.
