Well, I can certainly seen what both sides are coming from on this issue. It's quite touchy when people decide to disagree with their fandom. In fact when I tell people that I prefer Raymond E. Fiest and C. S. Lewis over Tolkien I tend to get pounced by the creepy fans. And I'm not saying that Tolkien is bad, I just didn't enjoy reading him that much. I thank him for what he's done with the genre, and I appriciate the Catholic undertones in the stories.

I read Eragon two winters back when a friend let me borrow the book. I was in desperate need of a new read while on winter break from my first year at college and she told me this was a great book.

Now, it was a good book, I will admit it. It entertained me for when I needed to be entertained, and I will go see the movie. I'm CP's age right now, and currently majoring in English with a creative writing concerntration at a local community college. I hope that one day I can share my ideas and stories with the people of the word. I've written fanfiction, originals, roleplay, and created characters just for the soul purpose of my own amusement, and I will definately agree with a few things about Eragon. It is cliche' and his characters are very flat and detetched from the author.

I am a firm believer if you don't treat the characters as part of yourself, or represent something important to you than they will end up very flat. This is mostly because you're feeding off qualities and characterist that are attached to characters and stories that belong to someone else and what they held important to them. I believe this has a lot to do with the fact that Christorpher never attended school. He has trouble finding things important and being inspired by the traits of real people because he lacks the experience of real life. I'm not saying the kid never had friends or whatnot, but if he had friends, then he most likely didn't have enemies. Get what I'm saying? When you're that secluded from society than how can someone be able to write about a society?

Well, I'm pretty sure that's more I had to say, but I lost my train of thought thanks to something random. ^___^

Well, favorite author is subjective entirely, so nobody should get mad at you for that as long as their work is actually decent.

The book was too die for. I personally loved it sooo much, I was extatic when they said they were going to make a movie. But the movie couldn't even come close to how fabulous htis book is. That guy has talent, no matter how young he is. I'm a writer and I'm only 13, but i cant compare myself to Him.

I see, im one year younger than you and I like the book. I see your point why you desagree we are giveing so much credit to the book. in a way I dont know how to take you aout of it as well i shouldnt. Your belives are what makes you, is what defines you and every single one of us. If i may ask, you said you were a writter and so these is my question. A origanal writter like now and deen has a idea that is alittle based on someones story, myth or legend but just better or improved. I realize that paolini made his book based on that long ago period in with all ready there were many books and movies close to it. Now i said diffrent because no one as done a book in with the protagonist as become and it is the last dragonrider or in were there are all of these races or creatures at the same time. Now of course in all of them there are these heroes with they are diffrent but close in a way. Now to the point, in what are you basing to make your writing on and what is diffrent from anyone alse? What is it to make a good book that no one as allready done? And if we find a way to put our soul to make a book far deffrent from everyone alse in with it describes a new story and your self, would we get good feedback, compliments, or joy? I think thats what makes a good book, maybe a origional one...i dont know...but i know people are afraid of what they dont know, understand, or control.... in a way, maybe thats what makes a human been, thats what makes us explore the unknown and to puch our selfs far from our ability,so why are you diffrent? why is paolini diffrent? to tell you the truth i dont even know if im writing the good questions to help me understand a writers, stories, or what... ever.....

All right, Daniel. I'm basing off of a whole lot of stuff, but none of it is quite cut-and-pasted. I use a considerable amount of mythology, Norse, Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Voodoo. I also base off of real cultures existing today, like Japanese and Indian. I try and mix them together enough so that they are indescernible from their original source. My problem with Paolini is that he has quite blatantly ripped everything off from the greats such as Tolkien, LeGuin, and George Lucas's Star Wars. There may be no story with the last of the dragon riders, but there is a storey about dragon riders who function along similar lines as those in Paolini's story, and there is a story about the last Jedi Knight.

I understand how you are doing your writing on, if you could im intersted in the plot but it sounds like a documental or something but anyway you give three exaples in with eragon is takeing form( my way is basing on) but i dont understand why to compare star wars with eragon. is it from the creacutures or formal meaning races? or because the last jedi knight? Tell me more about your writing more if you could, im in a way intersting on that. Because what stun me is all the things that you are basing in, i can only do that in my drawings and to do that on writing most be frostraiding. Well i dont know you that well so i dont know your capasinty or your ability to write.

You see, Daniel?

This is my main problem with Chris. The 'He's a genius' statement. If people would recognize it as second rate, I'd be fine.

Ah, Ok. Well, why I call it taking from Star Wars is that the plotlines are identical. Eragon/Luke is a farmboy whose uncle is killed by emmissaries of the Empire. He leaves with a mentor, the last of an Ancient warrior Order. He is trained, but the mentor is killed sacrificing himself for Luke/Eragon. The rogue (Han Solo/Murtagh) tags along, helping out the hero. They rescue a princess, returning her to the Rebellion/Varden, of which she is a prominent figure. In a massive battle, they destroy Durza/Death Star, a figurehead of the Imperial forces. You can probably fill in the blanks for Eldest. Yoda=Oromis, etc.

thank you azrael

i started reading eragon about two years ago, i used to be a huge fan. i still like it, but after realizing many complaints about plagiarism are true, i just dont like it as much.

its still a good book, never as good as things like star wars or LOTR, but theres really no point arguing anymore people. everything, i mean EVERYTHINGS been said

heheh, yeah, nobody.

But as to my writing, Daniel, I am creating a world. Races, cultures, religions, countries, history, all that good stuff. And it takes time, research, and a little bit of creativity. I base a lot off of mythology, but I tryu and blend them together well enough so it will be hard to discern the Welsh from the Japanese, etc.

Fantasy.

There's kind of a lot involved...It would take forever to explain and I'm not near done yet. Yeah, there are dragons, yeah, there are some Knights, but I don't want to be too broad because there are way too many categories under each.
