Uh yeah...to make a movie of a book that plagiarises just about every classic work out there is so insulting.
Wasn't Eragon written by a 15 year old or something?
He was 15 when he started it. Never attended high school, or even school for that matter. Anyways, he finished it around 19. This is no big achievement. The youngest author in the world was 4 years old. There are many teen authors with decent work, however they are ignored, wrongfully I might add. Knopf tried to cash in on the hype of Lord of the Rings. To learn the truth behind this atrocity that has been printed visit www.anti-shurtugal.com. This website is made by critics of the series, some of them also young authors who are dead ticked off about this series.
You must be a real hater of this if you have seeked out a website that is anti-shurugal (or whatever its called). I have heard good things about the book, but also critism. With some experienced screenwriters and direction hopefully this will be a rare case then in which the film is better than the book.
I have not read Eragon so i will not judge it yet.
Anthony
yo the book is grate so keep your mouth closed. He has talent thats why they published it
Yeah, the book rocks. I love it.
Personally I enjoyed the book quite a lot. If the number of critics outweighed the number of fans, then there would be no movie comming out, and the book would have never sold so well. While there do seem to be several cliche's...this book clearly pulles ahead of the average fantasy and into the minds of millions of readers. This clearly indicates that there is at least something endearing and incredible that pulled Paolini's work above the rest of the monotony of fantasy literature regardless of how drab some minorities may find it.
I completely agree i found the book excellent, and I hope the movie just comes close to what i thought this book achieved.
I work in a bookstore, and when this first came out, I was very skeptical. There is definitely a trend right now toward fantasy series where publishers are trying to capitalize on the success of Harry Potter and the revival of Lord of the Rings through the films. But I decided to give it a chance. I agree with a previous poster that the author borrowed heavily from authors before him, and not just scifi-fantasy authors. If you look at the speech Garrow gives to Eragon and Roran before they leave home, it sounds very close to the speech Polonius gives to Laertes in Hamlet. When I read the first chapter, I was sure I wasn't going to like the rest of the book because it did read like it was written by a fifteen-year-old with little experience. But as I went along, I came to like it more and more and have found it surprisingly well written. As for the borrowing, 'we write because we have read' and in the area of fantasy it is close to impossible to not 'stand on the shoulders of giants', as it were. If you are a Tolkien reader, for instance, it would be hard to see elves as creatures other than how Tolkien described them--tall, slender, elegant and graceful, as well as the wisest of all races. It's not just Eragon that borrows--most sci-fi and fantasy is connected by one idea or another.
The fact of the matter is that this is a good, quick read that just about anyone over twelve will have no problem with that ALSO has an engaging storyline with well thought out characters and events. The first book may have the feel of just about every fantasy book that came before it, but the second book is where he really stars to get into his own little groove. I mean, c'mon, you could see that little twist at the end coming since the character was introduced, but it's written in a way that holds your attention. I'm 19 and I couldn't put the second book down.
I just think they could've thought out the casting a little better. Jeremy Irons as Brom is not who I had in mind at all.
DONT be dissing Eragon cuz it rox and if it is copying other great works what r they anywayz?!?!? The people who bookmark antishurtugal.com are jealous cuz they r teens who publish books but theirs aren't as FABULOUS as Eragon. Humph. Dont diss Eragon, it ROXXXXX
im 14 and i thought the book was great. it could have had a little more action and what not but it was still a great book. i couldt stop reading it or the second one. ive read them both 6 times and it gets better every time i read them.
By the way the movie is probrably not plaragisim. Knowing the director he probably got permsion from the writer to do the movie. And yes there are a lot of young writer out there but let me ask you are any of them as good as (crap what's the writer's name agian?I'm to lazy to check.) No they are not! Not to mention if those young writers want to get heard have them trying promoting thier work! Hello, if you want to get noticed do somthing about it and don't sit there and whine about how this guy has loyal readers!
yea really. they need to find there own fans.... anyone who would diss eragon or eldest have some issues. ive read them both and there great. i cant wait for the movie... but i dont know what theyll do to the story. most of the time books that are made into movies are really messed with. i really hope that isent the case here. i cant wait for the third book eather.....SO MUCH TO WAIT FOR!!!
But Eragon is a rip off of every other fantasy.
Yo I think the whole Inheritance triligy is amazing! I was actualy reading Eldest and discovered that I bought a misprinted book that has some of a book called Inkspell in it, I wonder if its worth anything?? Email me if you have any insite on this, thanks. Jecs85@yahoo.com
Wow. Look at all of you bickering like little brats. Someone stats their opinion you attack them. That shows exactly what kind of people could appreciate such a hack of fantasy--fanatics. Its just as bad as the Star Wars fanatics. The anonymous person posted a very in depth critic website of Eragon...you should read it. Even I used to be a fan.
I agree. Eragon is a hack job, there is nothing original about it. Its just plain dumb if you ask me. Even the names not original. Eragon was a part of Elvish culture in The Lord of the Rings. It even sounds likes Aragorn.
My opinion: The book was great, sure it borrowed from other people, but who doesn't nowadays? I mean, people have been writing books for centuries and its just not possible to read all of them to make sure your not copying because no matter what you write about, somebody probably thought of it before you and wrote it down ten years ago or so. I had an idea for a book once and wrote it into the story I was creating.
A month later I showed it to my friends and they said my idea was copied from another author that had just written a book. I read the book and our idea was exactly the same. Coincidences happen, even if he did copy some ideas, it doesn't matter. The question is not how many things he can steal to make a book; the question is did you like how he combined the ideas of some of the world's best authors into a best-selling book?
right! anyway, even if he did copy somethings, the STORY is still his own. and everybody copys somethin. like our names..ur parents dident just think of a name. it has already been done, and most of us are named after somthin. so what if he did copy somethings. the story is good, the readers love it, and those who dont dont. u shouldent diss somthin lots of other people like. its ok to think that it sucks....(which it dont) but dont keep tellin. and for those who love eragon and eldest.....atra nosu waise vardo fra eld hornya un eyddr eyreya onr for they all speek......rauthr. to helgrind with them! se onr sverdar sitja hvass
To say he plagiarises because he used creatures like elves, dwarves, and urgals is just stupid. Do you really think Tolkien was the first to come up with them? And to say the plot is similar to others, you could say, to an extent, the same about every other fantasy novel out there.
Hes a big massive rip off. Most of his 'inspirations' are exactly the same as Tolkiens i read in an interview. Eragon is arragont plaigerism.
Hes taken all of Tolkiens lifetime research and rambled it up into a very mediocre piece of literature.
So, have any of you people who are bashing on the book, author, and movie actually read the book? If you have and didn't like it, then you can say so politely and appropriately. I read the book and I found it to be an incredible book. I've read Harry Potter and other fantasy books, and this is not only an original piece of work, but it's fantastic as well. And for your information, Christopher Paolini graduated high school at the age of fifteen. I must give Christopher props, because I would like to see any of these people who are submitting rude comments to create such a wonderful novel. I personally can't wait for the movie and I am planning on Getting Eldest soon, to continue the Inheritance Trilogy.
P.s.- If the book was so terrible, then why would there be a second one that came out. The book sold well, which means people loved it. And if there was plagerism, they would have taken the book off the market, sued the author, and ther would be no Eragon, Eldest, or Eragon the movie.
have u seen the person playing Arya she has blond hair. I thought in the book it described that she had jet black hair???
Whoever out there who thinks that Eragon is plagiarized should not even bother reading Eldest or any of the following creative stories by Christopher Paolini.
Christopher is a very talented author with a long carrer ahead of him. To me he's at the top of my list fantasy novels.
anti-shurtugal.com is the most ignorant, worthless website anyone could go to. it is a complete waste of time.
It seems to me that there is a disproportionate number of disgruntled bloggers on this site. What I am reading reeks of the jealousy of failed writers. Try this on for size: Paolini took existing ideas about dragons and elves and magic and modified them to make the medieval genre refreshingly new. Part of what makes the Inheritance Trilogy such a joy to read is the unbridled happiness and awe that Paolini feels on every page. I think he has amazed himself with the quality of his work as much as everyone else. I look forward to seeing what they can do in film with stories ripe for the telling. Well Done!
hey all-- i just wanted to tell you all that i think the book is abseloutly amazing. It was very entrancing, and had a mix of every emotion ever felt. And you know what?? When has there ever been a movie that did complete justice to the book(although i must say, LOTR was abseloutly fantastic) But really, books are books and movies are movies---if you're that mad, just don't watch it. And yeah I think the girl who plays Arya is blonde, but in the book it's darker--they could always have dyed it.
I'm a fourth grade teacher. Any book that encourages kids to read more books is a good book to me!! I've read the books (Eragon and Eldest) and they are a good read. I agree that the story line copies many concepts from other books, but most books do these days. Look at it from the point of view of a 10 year old who is innundated with video overload. They see a cool cover and actually want to READ! The book will help foster a love of reading in chidren. They need to start somewhere. Maybe they will want to find out where the story ideas originated from and want to read the classic fantasy literature. That is where I steer my students when they show an interest in Eragon and Eldest. Look at the big picture.
Personally, I enjoyed these books a lot. Taking an old idea and making it new or telling it in a different way has been tons of times. Do you know how many Holocaust stories there are out there? How many teen angst stories have been around? Do you know how many Rome and Juliet-like tales have been told? A story doesn't have to be original to be good. If you have enough talent, you could write a story that's been told over and over, like Cinderella, and it can still be good because you can WRITE. It's obviously cliche, but it's told in a way that's easy to read, and it grips you. I can't wait for the movie to come out.
The book is AWESOME! I know that the first book seems kinda like LotR and Harry Potter, but I like those, too :)
The second book is even better, I can't wait to see the movie!
Hey all! I notice someone put up a link to our site. Is there anything you guys wanna know?
he did finish high school...he finished it at 15. I'd agree to the fact that there are similarties to other books,,,but the VAST majority of the series (so far) is his own. and the reason his book got published is because his parents run a publishing company and when they were 'campaigning' Knopf noticed them and wanted to bring the book series out farther. so don't start bashing a guy when you don't know all the facts! that's just .....can I say...? wussy!
lik, i ned to se the movie
There is a few things i desperately want to know. When is the movie coming out for Eragon? Has Christopher decided what the third book will be called? How many books does Chris think there will be?
By the way, i personally think that Eragon and Eldest are the best books i've read in a while.
Diamondo, tell me anything that is of interest because i seriously think I am addicted to these books.
P.S: The punctuation in my last comment wasn't very good.
i loved the book...i thought it was perfect for me. fantasy creatures, scenerie and all...i loved how it was writen and im very very glad it was published. i thought it was much better then harry potter (not to trash him) it wasnt to young for older readers and it wasnt to adult for kids... i wrote a book after reading this one...but knowing the critisim on just this page scares me...and that was an awsome book..lol. i say congrats too the author and thanks for shareing. and i cant wait for the movie to come out. they never are as good as the books but ill still risk $6 to find out...
Sakura
Does Eragon remind anyone else of the original Star Wars Trilogy? I mean if you think about it Brom is kinda an Obi Wan and Eragon is Luke...Murtagh is Vader and Gabatorix is the Emperor...ect. etc. I dunno it just seemed alot like that to me...
if artists did not have inspiration and ideas from the past to draw upon, we would still be drawing stick figures on cave walls.
and most of tolkiens work was taken from ancient myth,as is most high fantasy.
stop winging u wimps, The guy did wel to produce such a book, so stop criticizing his work and maybe do something a bit more useful like writing a book ureselves, who knows u might even write something as good as eragon, but i doubt that very much!its people like you that ruin the beauty of writing
I like Tolkien, Star Wars and the Inheiritance trilogy and I think each are different. When I read the book, I was impressed with Paolini's creativity, descriptiveness and brilliant ideas. I did not think that Eragon was amazingly well-written, but he was 15, and he improved tremendously in Eldest. I think he has a great career ahead of him.
This book to me was outstanding... i actually have the book in my lap right now, and for whoever said that he never attended school, your wrong.. it said he graduated at the age of 15... Thats when he started the book and didnt finish until he was 19. Get your facts right, and quit discing the book, read it then you can talk about like or dislikes about it... but until you read it... buzz off.. these movies will be a close comparison to Lord of the Rings Series.. take the book and read it.. dont critisize on something that you havnt read~!
has he been Critized about Plaguarism? i think not? would they come out with a movie if he had been critizied for it? i think not! dont be dissin on it... and Roy.. What are you thinkin? you need to read the two books and get a life.... end of story... Eldest and Eragon might have taken what? 1 or 2 phrases from other books but he put them into his own words... thats not plauguarism.
12 year old,
The movie is set to Feature December 15th, but you can see previews of the movies May 26th at X-men 3 I think this movie is going to be a close comparison to LOTR Series and might even be a top box office hit
eragon rocks for one reason it is about a poor farm boy that is now a dragon rider and the publisher was only fifthteen
Listen, why can't everyone just enjoy the book for what it is? Sure it may take bits from other places, but it doesnt stop it from being a great book with a great story. I've read a lot of books in my time, and while Eragon and Eldest are not the best, they are still have an intriguing and interesting storyline with characters and experiences that to some extent i can relate too. So love it for being a good book that is far better than some of what you get out there.
Eragon is an OK book. There are several problems with it, but its still a nice book which you can read easily, most of the time.
the book is so great, i'm not sure that the movie can top it.
man i cant wait for this film its going to amazing i just hope im not let down and it really sucks. im prying here just for the traile at this point im so exited.
im so exited and i just cant hide it.
Word just in. 20th Century Fox have dropped this trailer with X3. It will now be with Superman Returns.
Anthony
Eragon is one of the best books I've read.It keeps you interested all the way through.Anyone whose going to act all stupid about it just because it was written by a fifteen year old who supposebly didn't go to school(which I dont believe whoever wrote that)but whover is going to judge the book based on how old the writer is or how much publicity they've gotten. Is pretty stupid if you ask me.Who cares if they've made a movie based on it I cant wait for it too come out cuz the book is flippin awesome.
ANONYMOUS-Some of you guys are haters
lol u ppl seem like u really like this book i havent read it but my friend has
i dont even think he knows yet ill tell him well im off to do nothing that is productive in anyway bye... tiiimmaaaayyy!!!
Whoever calls themselves Someone Else, listen up! I personally think that it is an insult to even mention Eragon and Star Wars in the same sentence! I mean, I know a lot of people like Star Wars and all, but it just can't compare to the remarkably high standards of Eragon OR Eldest.
I've read loads of Fantasy series, and Eragon is, sad to say, not exceptionally good. One of the problems is the whole deal of Dragons. I mean, that creature has ben used so many times that its becoming bland. C. P. could have used anything...a manticore or a phoenix or basilisk. it might have done better, being different then.
I noticed that Paolini, happened to mention many facts several times over. i know this is practised to varying extents in stories. However most of those stories usually revolve around several charcters points of view. But in the case of the Single POV style of Eragon, to constantly describe murtagh as a deadly and merciless fighter AFTER showing us an incident is pointless. People would say that he was a 15 year old kid when he wrote this but that does'nt cut it. If you want to write a book, then you will judged as an author. His characters make senseless descisions in some cases. (Eragon decides that he wont wear Zar'roc b'coz Hrothgar the dwarf king does'nt want him to, and Saphira agrees. The suddenly, she changes her mind and says that he must wear it and so on..... utterly going against her comments). His plotline is nearly devoid of any actual suspense or intrigue. If anyone thought that the twins were not traitors or that murtagh was not eragon's brother then i'm sorry for you. The facts were right out there, plain for anyone to see. I will not even start on the issue of what the author deems to call romance. Its just to painful.
btw, I love everything, i suggest that YOU do not! compare star wars and eragon. Star Wars is widely acknowleged an epic of science fiction. STAR WARS has had theatres clogged for days. Star Wars has made millions and millions of dollars. I did'nt see anyone clogging bookstores for ERAGON. and i certainly did'nt see it happening for Eldest. In fact, there were so many left over in stock, that booksellers began to sell it at half the price and less. finally, when they donated the remaining books to schools and other places. (i have proof from newspaper articles and seen this with my own eyes. good respectable newspaper mind. not a cheapy tabloid.
All, in all, i DO NOT hate Eragon, but i feel that this book has not been written to the best. It is unoriginal and archetypical.
TO C P.
If you were ever to read this let me tell you one thing. you shou;d have waited to perfect this story. Given a few years, it could have been much much better. theres no point in trying to beat some record of being a kid author. a 4-5 year kid, and a 11 year old french girl have already beaten you there. tis a shame.
To the REST:
yes, undoubtedly, the unpleasant commets will now flow, but it does'nt really matter. This is my opinion of the story, and i am untitled to write what i think about it so long as i stay within the perimeters and rules of conduct. However, before you post any comment be sure to read:
The Forgotten Realms by RA Salvatore,
The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
The Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R Martinn.
The Gameworld Trilogy by Samit Basu.
And before anyone sez that he was 15 and should be cut some slack, well, my opinion on that is aforementioned.
IB
Irratated Bibliophile : You're spelling and grammar is really messed up ...
Eragon seems to mainly appeal to people between the age of 6-18. I just finished reading Eragon and was not mightily impressed. Like what Bibliphile said if you have read other fantasy storys you will relise how overdone and average Eragon is. Its certainly no Star Wars, no Lord of the Rings, no Raymond E Feist, no Potter. Its nothing refreshing.
Roy
First of all, 'anonymous', everything you've said is a complete lie. Christopher Paolini graduated high school at 15, for your knowledge, and was home-schooled all his life. He finished Eragon four years ago at 19. If you think he has no talent, then why did the book appear #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list for 62 weeks!?!?!?!
Eragon is a great book, and if you think it isn't, well, you're just a gay ass.
I meant the Anonymous on page 1)
'He never attended high school, or even school for that matter' - anonymous
You make it sound like he's an ignorant idiot. It's called homeschool, just because he didn't attend a physical school doesn't mean that he didn't finish shcool. The fact that he graduated at 15 clearly shows that.
Hey dont u talk shit about christopher- he's great
Eragon is one of the best books ever written
and the eldest too, for that matter!
This is what everyone can accept about Eragon.
1. It is obviously 'borrowing' from many other fantasy stories already written.
2. People who read it do so because they enjoy the genre.
3. Eragon is not poorly written, but its obviously no Crime and Punishment or Lord of the Rings.
Basically, Eragon (the book) can be compared to your everyday action movie, or will ferrell/vince vaugn comedy. Its the kinda of thing that you see/read as sort of a guilty pleasure. In your mind, you know that theres plenty of other good things out there to read, and that Eragon does not measure to the many classics that are available. At the same time, we read the books anyway because we enjoy the genre. Probably, most people that read Eragon would read any other fantasy that was written at the same level of skill if presented and made available to them.
The point is, there really is no argument about the book. Anyone who does argue is just jealous because Paolini got lucky. Thats all it is. He was probably writing the books for himself, not for a publisher, and it just so happened that it turned out all right.
As a hopeful actor, I see other actors lucking out all the time (take the kid playing Eragon in the movie). Even my friend, who lacks experience, was picked up by Dustin Hoffman. Paolini got his book published, and it did well. However, keep in mind that it would not have even been published, say, 50 years ago. Nowadays, publishers know what the masses want.
By the way, I have read both of the books so far. I enjoyed them, but they aren't the kind of books I would go around recommending. Its just something to do when you have some down time.
Also, don't try to start an argument with me. I just stumbled across this website while looking for a trailer, and probably won't check back.
Later.
I dont agree. Paulini Put a lots of work into his boocks, he studied, compared
and changed, asked people whos made fantsy-bestsellers before, and so on
The triology is his lifework, not a lucky shot. A pity you wont come back
we colud disskuss th matter.
I think that you considre Eragon as a low class-novel, but I dont think that the thousands of fans think so. Eragon is a result of a talent, young author.
The fact that he lended from other fantasy novels isn't uniqe. J R R tolkien
for example lended from authrors before him too. But what Paulini did was also uniqe. how many fantasybooks can you find where dragons are inteligent, GOOD creatures, and where humans (like Eragon) can have frendly relationships
with them? He braught a new face to the dragons, the biggest fantasy icons, and THATS uniqe.
Besides, why are you talking about his schooltime? Make sence! it does not matter ,hi i a great authror!
Dude three things.
1. The First book rocked (Eragon)
2. The second book rocked (Eldest)
3. If they screw up the series with the movie I'll never forgive them.
P.S. There's going to be a video game ERagon around the time of the release of the movie. For PS3 and Xbox 360 more than likely.
No, if the film sucks i'll go mad. Im waiting for both the third book and
the film, and if any of them fails I'll have an depression.
The triology is one of the bests books ever, (at least so far) and I prey that
the film neither the third book will let all Eragon-fans down.
You know, I think alot of people will be dissapointed with the movie Eragon. I mean look what they did to Harry Potter 4. They murdered it, butchered up the corpse, and stuck it together into what they call a movie. As most books-to-movies go, the movie is usually a deformed version of the book with add-ins that weren't even in the book. Don't set your hopes high, walk in to the movie theatre, and just hope for a good but slightly off version of Eragon. The movie comes out December 15, 2006. :( I don't want to wait that long...
Im not so negative. There are signs that the film will be great, you cant be sure. What they did to Harry Potter 4 is true, they just took 1/10 off the book in it, they cuted it appart.
hi. i couldn't help but overhear you jerks insulting Eragon. That is a great book! and just because Eragon has similarities to other stories does not not mean it's a rip-off! It's nearly impossible to write fantasy and sci-fi without being a little cliche. believe me, i should know. it's called inspiration! not plagerism. this is exactly like how people say Family Guy is a ripoff of the Simpsons! besides, George Lucas admitted that there were a handful of things that he borrowed from Buck Rodgers and Dune. so if you're going to call Eragon a fraud knowing that, then you guys are hypocrites. so shut up.
One more thing. I love Eragon. i can't wait for the film. from everything i've seen and heard so far, it looks awesome. it looks pretty loyal to the book, and it will probably at least be nominated for at least one oscar, for something like best costume design or special effects or something like that. this movie's gonna kick @$$!
I also want to add a few more things.
1. i have recognized the similarities between Eragon and other scifi fantasy epics
2. i am starting a fantasy series of my own with a few similarities to Eragon and other stories. so knowing that, Roy and nonamewritten, are you gonna start calling me a ripoff artist too? huh? besides, i met CP when he came to cleveland on his tour 4 eldest. I gave him a synopsis of my story, and he approved of it! did he say i was ripping off of him? no. did he say i was ripping off of anybody else? no. so in the immortal words of eric cartman: nananana nana! hahahaha haha!
I do not insult Eragon,it is a great book and u missunderstood what I said.
Read my texts again please.
Im with u to 100% for christ sake!!!!
Besides, im writing a fantasy myself, inspired of Eragon and lord of the rings.
Beg for apologi!
Besides, cartman in southpark is the best caracter, even if he is a psycopath
and I must say again: IM THE GREATEST CRISTOPHER PAULINI FAN EVER
I agree with u!
So dont call me hypocrite.
It's not a matter of whether or not he borrows stuff. As I think was said like three pages ago, every fantasy has base in something else. Tolien certainly relied heavily on Norse mythology, but it's what he did with it that makes his series great. There is very little depth to any of the cultures or races. Ok, granted he came up with a story for how magic came about, but what about ancient history?
The Riders were in charge. Big deal.
What were the elf kingdoms like? Were there ever massive wars beside the whole incident with elves and dragons. Surely somebody revolted against the Riders. He failed completely to do anything new or interesting to the races. The dwarves are dim, secluded, and drink a lot. The elves are pretty and graceful. Sound similar to Lord of the Rings? Show me something that'll make me think, Mr. Paolini!
There is no Turin of Alagaesea. There is no story that so grips your heart that you sit there and stare at the book for a few moments just thinking about what you've read. When Sirius died in HP, I did that. When Dumbledore died, it made me want to commit sepukku. When Boromir died, I was shocked and mad. When Turin and his sister/wife jumped off of that cliff, I was very moved. Nothing in Eragon evokes any powerful reaction from me.
I disliked the character himself from the beginning. He is arrogant, whiny, and I'm surprised Brom didn't take his head off just from listening to him.
Will I see the movie? Possibly. If I am invited, maybe. Will I read the third book? If that can be done at no personal expense.
You have no idea what u are talking about. these days it is impossible to wright a fantisy containing dwarwes, elvs ect. without make it sound similar to other books.
I was deeple chocked several times in the books, for example the death of Brom and when Murthagh turned in to 'the dark side'. The book is a work of a great talent, and don't say Eragon is whiny. Wouldent u bee when the destiny of the word where put on ure sholders without asking for it?
HUH?!
There is no problem with writing about elves/dwarves. The problem is that he didn't do his homework and add at least one interesting twist.
On Eragon's whininess: It's insufferable. Yeah he;s responsible for the world. So's Harry Potter. So's Aragorn. So's Luke Skywalker. So's Frodo Baggins. They have bouts of depression (in Harry's case rage) but they are mature. Eragon's supposed to be a man at 16, but does he display an ounce of maturity?
No. instead it's, 'Brom, I wanna use magic. Brom's holding me back. Brom, make me happy. Brom save my life. Brom, I'm retarded and get into trouble, and you save my life every time at great personal risk, but why do you get mad at me?'
At least Earthsea's Ged grows out of this, which is the point of the first book.
Ok...the writer is amazing. Who cares if he was fifteen when he wrote it? Personally, i would rather have the second movie come soon...but it's still an amazing book. Anyone who has only read the biography and NOT the book has NO right to critisize it.
I have read both books, if it is to my comments you refer.
I saw X-Men 3 They didnt show Eragorn for the privews. Do u know, when there gonna show it, at the movie preview?
They cancelled those plans and pushed it to Superman. You can see the Eragon preview then.
I thought that both of the books were exceptional and I can't wait to see the movie. It seems to me that the people who are insulting the books probly aren't smart enough to understand them. The people at the website anti-shurtugal can take their comments and stick them somewhere because they're jealous that their books won't get published (boo hoo)!
What is there to understand? If I wanted to see this story well done I can watch Star Wars.
You have no arguments so rather than actually try and convince somebody of your point of view (with your obviously superior intelligence it should be no trouble) you insult and make fun. And I'm brainless because I don't like Eragon, hm? Truly pathetic.
To just read eragon make me bee paralyze of such a good story, the hell Harry Potter and the other ones but eragon deserves more. To make a movie would breing a legend to life or desapointment to everyone. hope we all liked.
bay the way duses, I just read the first book I'm looking for the eldest one in spanish version because that way I would understnaded more and are you shure that the preview would be in the superman because I was so expecting the preview in the x-men 3.
Pretty sure. It was posted in this same topic a while ago.
And Eragon is not worth the title 'legend.'
Hey Azreal!
Perheps Eragon is a bit whiny, but that makes the story more realistic. At the beginning he is a bit arrogant (perhaps even stupid) but during the second book he becomes a man and understand that he must stand on hes own legs. Have you even read the second book? can you tell me then he is whiny and ignarront there? The point off the whole triology is to see Eragons transformation from a poor farm boy to a hero, and Paulini has whritten the book so you can compere Eragon with yourselfe! Every body is a bit whiny from time to time but, thats why the book is realistic, and why so many people love Eragon. He is not a classic hero, like Luke skywalker, but a normal person like like everybody elese (at least at first)
Don't insult the book with stupid comments, like Justin said; u can stiff them up ure ###!!!!!
Eragon is werther you like it or not, a great book loved by public and critsism, a bestseller in both america and Europe, and the small minorety that hates it is a bunch of one-way-thinking, whiny bessewissers. I hope you are not one of them.
(sorry for that hard comment erlier; didnt mean it)
Had you looked at one of my earlier posts, you would see that the answer to that question is in the affirmative.
Yes he is a classic hero. He's identical to Luke Skywalker with a few hundred character flaws tacked on. I don't compare Eragon to myself because if he went to my school, I'd knock his face off. I can compare Harry Potter to myself because he's pretty much trying to be your average guy at school. He has his friends, his enemies, his crushes, etc. And he's always been a decent person. If he went to my school, I'd be quite happy to befriend him. Eragon has his friends. And some more friends. And some more friends. And a crush who doesn't want him in the slightest. And then there are the bad guys. Eragon would be one of those rich preppy boys who expect the world handed to him on a silver platter. But the past part is: he has no reason to expect that. He's an ignorant farmboy who should be used to hardship and struggling to feed himself/his family. What license has the jerk to exist?
Comparing once more to Mr. Potter: Harry has flaws. Eragon has flaws. Harry is mature. Eragon is not. Harry doesn't always vocalize complaints to the world about how everybody's picking on him.
btw, noname, you might want to read that message in bright red letters on top of your screen that's supposed to stand out to say not to cuss or 'use expletives (including f*** etc).' That is, if you want your posts to stay up. I've been doing my best to stay pretty decent so far, so let's try and keep it civil :) And the 'a' comes before the 'e' in Azrael.
I wouldn't say great. I doubt in twenty years people will really care anymore.
2 things:
a) bessewisser?
b) Closed mindedness.
Come now. Wold I be sitting here arguing with you If I were completely closed to the possibility of Eragon being proven a good book? I think not. A long time ago, I would have said 'OMG eragon suxxorz,' and left to go frollicking in my invisionfree forum.
You most have a pretty good hate to eragon. Maybe the reason why we all like eragon is that it has something deffrent about that I can't explain. I apologize if you got ofended because I gave the name legend to eragon, the reason that I give that to the book is because is the best book so far. But may I ask what is something you would give the name legend to? is it someone that is been remember for something he did over many years or someone that is unique. I don't maind harry p. or strar w. but the reason I thing you like those books or sorties are because they can some how relate to your life or to our present life in a way.
Daniel here confirms what iv'e been trying to say all along. Harry Potter for example is supposed to be a glamurus hero, one who never complains loudly. C. Paolini have tryied to not make eragon such a hero, but a hero not afraid to pity himself and complin about the world; things we do all the time. This is to make it possible for other (real) people to recognice themselves in Eragon. Insted off putting up strict lines for the story, C. Paolini make his story realistic; many people helps him becuase:
a) he is the last not corrupt dragon rider able to stop Galbatorix
b)almost eveyone in Galbatoix Empire hate their emperor becuase he is cruel.
P.S. Bessevisser means something I cant translate in Englisch
thanks for your explenation. but to tell you the true is that eragon is just a good book in wich you may be right on were we are able to comepare your self but not that much. I mean harry p. has all these people around in wich we may be able to comeper our teens life to it. Yes is true that the writter make eragon a guy that complaine about his desteny or life. Now that I think about it harry and eragon are caind of equal.
1) harry complained and got way to angry between 5th -6th about what people expect of him to do or become. Eragon was caind of the same.
2) they both have to learned from there mistakes and life so they can become heroes and have the wisdom necesary for the final battle. but the thing is that the reason why these protagonist are the way they are is because you need time for all of this things to happen so they can determen what to chose. not like giveng them a clock in front of there faces.
they are just guys with problems that are not like ours but in with we can comepare or difine our problems to theres. thats way we may give such a high mark in these stories.
I can say no more, just agree with you, Daniel. :)
On Eragon's 'legend' status:
In a century, ask someone to tell you about Eragon. You'll probably get blank stares.
LotR, 1930's: 75 years down the line: They made an incredibly profitable movie. And people are still asking for more with The Hobbit.
Star Wars, 1977: 30 years later: another massive movie. There's talk of doing the third trilogy with Grand Admiral Thrawn with George Lucas's children.
Eragon: Five years later: You've got people like me and people better than me starting hatelistings, writing reviews for Entertainment Weekly that say horrible things about the book. Here we're starting a movie trilogy, but there's a heapload of dissent.
Not that great things don't always get amazing reviews, Star Wars got ripped up by critics. But I'm saying wait fifty years till we're all old. There will be no hype, no classes exploring Eragon like there are of LotR. There are even classes on Tolkien's languages, for God's sake. Will Paolini receive this? Time will tell.
And none of you guys have offended me, just in case you're worrying. I just note those things that I think should be addressed.
about time you answer my question. well, if you don't thing is possible for eragon to bee a legend is your choise but let me let you know that star w. became a legend because people would not let it go as well the lord of the r. Now I think that for those that are reading these that is my choise and it should be for everyone else to make eragon last as we can because good stories are not for us only but it should be presented to futured generations. Thanks for answerig the cuestions and for most of us been civilized all this time.
Well I can not see a reason why Eragon wouldent be a legend.
Perhaps the will make new movies about Eragon in the future (the had done many movies based at LOTHR, there is no argument why it should not. J R R Tolkiens books where killed bu critics at first, but they praise Eragon and Eldest.
