As director Clint Eastwood nears completion of post production on ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ the story of the famous WWII battle of Iwo Jima, he is prepping to begin shooting the Japanese counter-part ‘Red Sun, Black Sand’ (released as ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’) in Japan.
RSBD revolves around the real-life Japanese General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, who battled American troops for 40 days on the small island of Iwo Jima.
Ken Watanabe (‘The Last Samurai’) has been signed to play the lead. Starring with Watanabe in this Japanese language film will be Japanese stars Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryo Kase and Shido Nakamura.
Steven Spielberg is producing both films, which tell the story of the famous WWII battle from the US and the Japanese sides. New Oscar® winner Paul Hagis (‘Crash’) will executive produce the movie being written by himself and Iris Yamashita.
DreamWorks and Warner Bros. are teaming on the projects which will be released later this year.
