Cairo - In the wake of global controversy over publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, an Egyptian film producer has announced the first Arab-made film project detailing the life of Jesus Christ.
A central theme of the film, which is projected to cost far more than the average Egyptian production, will be the holy family's flight to Egypt, producer Mohammed Ashub told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa in Cairo on Monday.
In order to avoid the film giving offence to Christians, it will first be screened for clerics of the Egyptian Coptic Christian church, Ashub said.
Muslims regard Jesus as a prophet, but not as the son of God.
In the global debate following the contentious publication of cartoons of the Islamic prophet, some Muslim clerics had pointed out that it was forbidden to depict any prophet, not just Mohammed, through images or through the use of actors.
