John Travolta and Queen Latifah get 'Hairspray'
By M&C News Mar 5, 2006, 10:33 GMT
Back in ’88 local writer and director John Waters, known for his sometimes very strange movies about his native Baltimore Maryland released a comedy ‘Hairspray’. Broadway adapted the film to a stage play in 2002 and the play went on to win eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Director.
And now, New Line Cinema will turn the movie turned stage play back into a movie which, according to Toby Emmerich, New Line's President of Production, John Travolta (‘Saturday Night Fever’, ‘Pulp Fiction’) and Queen Latifah (‘Chicago’, ‘Bringing Down the House’) have been signed to star with Adam Shankman ( ‘Bringing Down the House’) helming.
Travolta will play Edna Turnblad and Queen Latifah will play Motormouth Maybelle in the film. A search is presently underway for an actress to play the film’s lead Tracy Turnblad.
Production is scheduled to begin in the fall for a planned 2nd quarter 2007 release.
