James Cameron, who hasn’t directed a film since his 1997 blockbuster 'Titanic' has resurfaced by giving the nod to Laeta Kalogridis, his co-writer on 'Battle Angel' to adapt the Sports Illustrated story ‘The Deadly Dive’ by Gary Smith.
Lighthouse Entertainment bought the story rights as well as rights to a subsequent book by Smith and the autobiography of free diver “Pipin” Ferras. The movie will be the tragic love story of Ferras and his wife Audrey Mestre who lost her life attempting to better her world record of swimming 557.7 feet deep with but a breath of air in her lungs.
Cameron will direct for 20th Century Fox and Lightstorm and produce with Lightstorm’s Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini.
Cameron has been toying with submersible equipment practicing for his most recent announced film, ‘Battle Angel’. While a live action film, the main character will be done in CG animation and will be shot in 3D using the stereo imagining system that he developed for his documentaries (‘Ghosts of the Abyss’, ‘Aliens of the Deep’)".
Cameron also filmed Ferraras when he matched the depth of his wife’s fatal dive in Cabo San Lucas, where the couple first met. It is likely that Cameron will use that actual footage in the film, much as the way he used actual footage from his own exploration of the Titanic wreck.
