Director James Mangold (Walk the Line) has signed to helm a remake of the 1957 Western 3:10 to Yuma for Sony Pictures Releasing, according to publilshed reports.
Based on a short story by Elmore Leonard, the original starred Glenn Ford and Van Heflin, telling the tale of a sheriff's struggle to bring an outlaw to justice.
As Mangold explained his version to Variety: "There are a lot of good-bad themes that were only touched on in the original. A lot of Westerns are meditative, but this is a total struggle culminating in a showdown, which has the potential to be one of the great movie gunfights."
Mangold and his wife Cathy Konrad will produce the movie.
