Good news for fans of quality animation. ‘Toy Story 3’ is dead. With the acquisition of Pixar by Disney, things are already changing inside the house of mouse. Disney’s buyout of Pixar puts Pixar people in charge of most of Disney’s animation operations. Former Pixar creative chief John Lasseter for instance has taken over as head of Disney’s Animation division. His first action as their new boss was to shut down production on ‘Toy Story 3’, a sequel to the Pixar classics being made by Disney animators without the involvement of any of the film series’ original creators. ‘Toy Story 3’ was to follow the toys from the first movies overseas, when Buzz is recalled. The plot sounded a lot like a rehash of ‘Toy Story 2’ except set in Europe, the preferred sequelizing location of Chevy Chase. According to Lasseter, if the film is ever made it’ll only be done with the blessing of the original films creators and even then only if there’s a story that demands it. In other words, as long as Lasseter is in charge, expect an end to Disney’s practice of shuffling out sub-standard sequels to their classic films as a way to generate new revenue streams.
