Tom Hanks named America's favourite movie star

Jan 24, 2006, 14:56 GMT

Tom Hanks has been named America's favourite movie star for the second year in a row.

The two-time Oscar winner topped the poll despite not releasing any films in 2005.

Second place in the Harris Poll went to Johnny Depp for his performance as Willy Wonka in the remake of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.

Third place was a tie between 'Star Wars' actor Harrison Ford and the late John Wayne.

Cowboy star Wayne, who died in 1979, was the only deceased star to make the top 10.

'Pretty Woman' Julia Roberts rounded out the top five.

Oscar-winning director, Clint Eastwood, came in sixth, while seventh place was a tie between 'Lethal Weapon' star Mel Gibson and screen legend Katherine Hepburn.

George Clooney, who released both 'Syriana' and 'Good Night, and Good Luck' in the US last year came in at number eight, just above the original James Bond, 75-year-old Sean Connery.

Sexy actress Sandra Bullock made the top ten for the first time in two years after her starring role in the critically acclaimed racial drama 'Crash'

Among the big names who failed to make the list this year are 'War Of The Worlds' star Tom Cruise, father-to be Brad Pitt and 'Training Day' star Denzel Washington.
