Shue leaves, Carrey marries Madsen

After getting awards buzz for her role in Sideways a couple of years ago, Virginia Madsen is finally getting bigger parts. She’s stepped in to replace Elisabeth Shue in the upcoming Jim Carrey obsession thriller ‘The Number 23’, according to Variety.

Shue had been on board to play Jim’s wife in the film, but with her recent pregnancy, she’s dropped out, presumably to practice mid-labor breathing. Instead Madsen now has the part, making 2006 a pretty busy year for her. She’ll be in theaters next month as part of the Harrison Ford thriller ‘Firewall’ and she’s just finished filming on Robert Altman’s next movie, ‘A Prairie Home Companion’.

‘The Number 23’ is the story of a man who reads a book called, appropriately, “The Number 23” and begins to suspect that the book is about him. The character in the book dies at the end, and so he becomes obsessed with the book and the number 23 in order to avert what he believes is his impending death.
