Joaquin Owns the Night

Though perhaps he deserves it for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in ‘Walk the Line’, Joaquin Phoenix is probably a long shot to win Oscar’s Best Actor award. That’s alright, if he keeps taking roles like this, he’ll get one eventually.
Production Weekly reports that Phoenix has signed up to star in ‘We Own the Night’, an epic crime drama being written and directed by James Gray. Joaquin has worked before, in 2000 he starred in the Gray’s last directorial outing, ‘The Yards’.
‘We Own the Night’ is a film set against the background of Russian organized crime in 1980’s New York. The Russian mob has put out a hit list of NYC police officers, and a man named Joseph must save his brother and father, who are next on the mob death squad’s agenda. Phoenix would presumably play Joseph. Robert Duvall is also attached, probably to play the father. Also on board is Eva Mendes.
With ‘Walk the Line’ done, out, and on the way to the Academy Awards, Phoenix’s schedule is completely clear. Working for Gray is the only thing on his horizon.
