Santo Domingo - Hollywood actor and director Robert de Niro launched filming Monday in Santo Domingo for the spy thriller 'The Good Shepherd'.

In the biopic about James Wilson, an American spook who helped found the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), de Niro himself and Hollywood heartthrob Matt Damon will portray the older and younger lead character, respectively.

Angela Jolie will co-star.

The recently renovated historic centre of Santo Domingo was chosen by de Niro as the ideal location to replicate the charm of the Cuban capital, Havana, in the middle decades of the 20th century.

Other parts of the Dominican Republic, on the eastern side of Hispaniola, the Caribbean island it shares with Haiti, will be used to shoot scenes set in the Congo and other exotic locales from CIA history.

For security reasons, the Dominican army encircled Monday's film shoot in Santo Domingo.
