Burton and Depp sing Sweeney Todd
By Joshua Tyler Jan 8, 2006, 22:32 GMT

Based on the hit Broadway musical which tells the infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. ...more
Post-Chicago, the adaptation of Broadway musicals into feature films hasn't exactly been successful. But then it hasn't been done by Tim Burton.MovieMusicals.net says it's about to be.
According to sources they claim are "anonymous", director Tim Burton and favorite muse Johnny Depp will collaborate on a movie musical adaptation of Stephen Sonheim's 'Sweeney Todd'. Depp would of course play the title role of Sweeney, a demonic barber who slits the throats of his customers.
A feature film version of 'Sweeney Todd' has long been in discussion, but as of yet hasn't moved far enough in production to make it happen. John Logan wrote a screenplay that was originally to be used by Sam Mendes for his take on the play, but Mendes left to make 'Jarhead' and 'Sweeney Todd' has remained in development hell.
Burton could opt to start with a new script, or use the existing Logan version. There's no word on what direction he and Depp plan to take the project.

These people on the internet have been pissing my off they are mocking the talent of an ACADEMY AWARD WINNER!!! HE'''S JOHNY FREAKING DEPP!
I think that if anybody could play this character and do it well, it would oviously be JOHNNY DEPP! I mean, he has played:
. A teenager stalked and killed by a dream demon
. A man (created by a mad scientist) with scissors for hands
. An american-indian who stars in a snuff movie
. A legendary lover (the greatest in the world)
. A charming, quick-thinkiing, gold-toothed pirate
. A troubled detective investigating Jack the Ripper
. A corrupt CIA agent
. A paranoid, reclusive writer
. A gypsy horseman
. The eccentric owner of the largest chcolate factory in the world
and many more, equally fascinating characters!! So, playing a role like this - I say not a problem for our talented mr depp!
Um. Wow. I hope this is true as well.
I'm not a BIG musical fan. But Sweeny Todd is my hands-down absolute favorite.
I've seen it many times, but have always wanted to see it in movie form and be able to share it with friends.
I also love TIm Burton as a filmmaker, and always trust his visions, and Depp's talent, and love the movies they make together. So, naturally. I'm WAY excited.
MAKE IT.
PLEASE!
Depp is an incredible actor, and I'm not out to discredit his talent. But I can't imagine anyone portraying the demon barber better than Broadway's current Sweeney, Michael Cerveris. His intensity in the role is beyond any other performance I've seen on stage or screen, and it's a shame if he's not being considered to reprise the role in the upcoming film.
If anyone can do justice to the movie version of Sweeney Todd, it'll be Tim Burton. I'd be skeptical of it in anybody else's hands.
But Johnny Depp I AM skeptical of. I love Johnny Depp as an actor and have yet to not love a role Depp has played, but Johnny Depp just doesn't have the training or experience necessary to pull off the vocals, and I'd hate to see the title role dubbed.
And FYI, Depp was dubbed in Cry Baby. And even if he wasn't, the styles of Cry Baby and Sweeney Todd are so off that to compare them would be like comparing apples and pomegranits. Forget oranges.
sorry, but some of you have obviously not hears the score to sweeney todd and maybe you dont know exactly how demanding it is on sweeney's voice. johnny depp is one of my favorite actors, and i have no doubts at all that he could play the part, but i have to admit that i am a bit wary.
Did anyone say this was going to be a musical? There have been many adaptations of musicals that haven't included any of the original score. I personally couldn't see Tim Burton doing a movie where every line is nothing but song. Either way, I love his movies, and I'm sure it'll be fantastic.
I still think johnny depp will be fantastic, he always is. Gerard Butler who they casted as the phantom in the film adaptaion of the phantom of the opera had no vocal training what so ever and he did a great job. Johnny is very dedicated to his roles and im sure he will be most willing to do anything required to make sure that sweeney todd fans are not dissapointed.

I hope these rumours are true! Johnny Depp singing would be amazing, hopefully he won't be lip synching... His voice is so pretty
