As you probably know by now, director Jon Favreau’s next project will not be another kids’ movie. Instead, he’s taking his first stab at a massive sci-fi epic by adapting the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs novel “John Carter of Mars” into a feature film. Well… maybe anyway. Favs spoke with Empire Online about the project that I think we’d all assumed was a sure thing, and sounds a little hesitant. “The way it stands is that we have artists working on research, we’re working on a script and we should know by the spring whether we’re going ahead or if the project goes back on the woodpile,” he says. This is a project that’s been on the woodpile before. It’s had several different directors attached to it over the years, and never quite made it into production. But Favreau has high hopes for it should the thing get off the ground. “It’s pretty big. Theoretically it could spin out into a fully fledged franchise, which is, I think, what the holy grail is for the movie studios now.” Studios are in the business of making money, so of course they’re always thinking franchise. But we’d probably all be better off if the people like Favreau working on the creative end would spend less of their time worrying about how many movies they can stretch this out into and instead spend their time focusing on one good film. A good movie is exactly what John Carter of Mars could be though. Or at least one hell of a spectacle. “It’s actually been a bit of a creative well spring than influenced Star Wars a great deal and Superman can kind of be traced back to it. Basically any science fiction goes back to the grandfather, which is John Carter,” says Favreau. Superman plus Star Wars sounds pretty good. Let’s hope he can make it happen where others have failed.
