Spielberg's spoonful of sugar

A remake of the classic 1964 movie musical. ...more
Steven Spielberg is coming off one of his most original, stripped down, unflinching films in the form of 'Munich'. You wouldn't expect him to follow it up with a remake. But that may be exactly what the 'E.T' director is doing.
According to a rumor posted on the website ContactMusic.com, Spielberg is planning a remake of the classic 1960's family movie musical 'Mary Poppins'. The rumor comes from the director of the London stage version of the 'Mary Poppins' story Sir Richard Eyre. He says he's been approached by Steven to direct a new film remake of the flying nanny's adventures.
Eyre says, "It will be hard to outdo the original but kids love the story and I'm sure that the remake will be a real success." He hasn't confirmed that he's actually signed up to do with it, but that sounds a lot like he's on board to direct. Presumably, that would leave Steven Spielberg in a producer or executive producer capacity. Since he's looking to hire the director of the stage version, it's also a safe bet to assume that the movie will still be a musical.
The original starred Julie Andrews as the titular character, surrounded by a cast of dancing penguins, children, and Dick Van Dyke.
