New World gets a new cut

Here’s a shocker, Terrence Malick’s ‘The New World’ isn’t finished. The film has already been screened for critics around the country and it’s even being released in theaters this Sunday, but the movie isn’t done.

Malick has confirmed to Variety that he’s still tinkering with the movie, perhaps in response to early criticism that the film is too long and the pacing is a drag. The original cut shown to critics and being shown this weekend is a 149-minute version of the movie. Malick says he’s trimming maybe 15-20 movies off the picture, for a wider release early in 2006.

Why not just hold the film altogether until it’s done? In order to qualify for a 2005 Oscar, the movie has to be released before January 1st.
