With Paramount’s management shakeup earlier this year came a lot of changes. One of those was the removal of director Stephen Sommers from Paramount’s remake of ‘When Worlds Collide’. Well forget that, Sommers is back and he’s ready to make worlds crash.
Variety reports that Stephen Sommers has been brought back onboard to write and direct the new version of the 1951 classic Sci-Fi pic. It’s being produced by Paramount in conjunction with filmmaking mogul Steven Spielberg. Sommers has a lot of experience in the genre, as the director of money making flicks like ‘Van Helsing’ and ‘The Mummy’.
‘When Worlds Collide’ is basically a disaster flick. When scientists detect another planet on a collision course with Earth, they decide to build a rocket to send a few lucky individuals into the safety of airless, foodless outer space. Hey, at least it’s better than being crushed by an entire planet.
Sommers has been in and out of more than one project lately. He was originally to direct the comedy ‘A Night at the Museum’ but dropped out. That left him free to return to ‘Worlds Collide’. Sommers is also working on a new version of the camp movie ‘Flash Gordon’, hopefully minus the camp.
