Get Smart gets Segal

Based on the classic television series of the same name. This film is about the battle between good and evil that takes place under society\'s nose. The story, set in modern-day Manhattan, follows a coalition of terrorists (known as CHAOS), who battle a heavily gadgeted anti-terrorist organization that is an offshoot of the CIA (known as CONTROL), which features such members as Chief, the beautiful Agent 99 and the unflappable Maxwell Smart, Agent ...more
In one of the best casting ideas in awhile, Steve Carell is playing Max Smart, a role made famous by recently deceased actor Don Adams. He's been locked in to the 'Get Smart' movie adaptation for awhile, but now the project's getting moving in earnest.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Peter Segal has signed on to direct 'Get Smart' for Warner Bros. Segal's a veritable fountain of successful comedic filmmaking. His last movie was one of this year's few semi-profitable flicks, the Adam Sandler football comedy 'The Longest Yard'. On his resume you'll find other funny heavy hitters like '50 First Dates', 'Anger Management', and 'Tommy Boy'. All of those movies made a lot of money, though it's perhaps debatable whether or not they're actually funny.
Segal at least knows how to get people in seats, we're probably safe in counting on the runaway talent of Steve Carell to take care of the laughs. The film's just finished undergoing a rewrite, and will reportedly give Maxwell Smart's story a more modern setting in which CONTROL is suffering from lack of funding as the government spends all its cash on other spy agencies like the CIA.
