‘Master and Commander: Far Side of the World’ director Peter Weir won’t make his next movie ‘Master and Commander 2’, despite rumors that a sequel might happen. Instead, he’s signed up to direct ‘Shantaram’ for Warner Bros.
Variety says Weir is still in the final stages of negotiations with Warners, but when it’s complete he’ll step in to start developing the film with screenwriter Eric Roth. ‘Shantaram’, when the scripts finished, will be the story of an Australian heroin addict who escapes a maximum security prison and flees to India. There, he creates a new life for himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay. In order to get medication for his patients, he engages in a wide range of illegal activities like counterfeiting, gunrunning, and smuggling.
The film is based on a novel which is in part based on the true-life adventures of its author Gregory David Roberts. ‘Shantaram’ will star Johnny Depp as the Roberts based character.
