Hills Have Eyes hit with NC-17

After cranking out a weak PG-13 movie earlier this year, famed horror director Wes Craven is getting back to being brutal. He’s producing a remake of his 1977 horror flick ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, and Craven says the new version is so disturbing and so intense, that the MPAA has slapped it with an NC-17 rating.

But Craven tells Empire Online that an NC-17 is unacceptable. “We have to deliver an R rating,” he says. An NC-17 is still regarded as commercial suicide, so Craven and Alexandre Aja, the director of the remake, will be making cuts to get it back into R territory.

The film is the story of a suburban family stuck in the desert being terrorized by a group of mutants. The original movie is at times gruesome, and the new movie is described as an “amped up” version.

‘The Hills Have Eyes’ redo is slated for a March 10 release date, which leaves them plenty of time to meet the MPAA’s demands. Craven says that even though it’ll have to be R for a theatrical release, they’re planning to release a “full strength” version of the movie on DVD.
