Adam Sandler deals with 9/11 loss

The list of directors lining up to make 9/11 themed movies is long, and three of them are already in production. The most controversial film will come from Oliver Stone, and one of the others will star Adam Sandler. No, it isn’t a comedy (we hope).

According to Variety, Sandler is in talks to star alongside Don Cheadle in writer-director Mike Binder’s ‘Reign O’er Me’. The $20 million dollar movie would cast Sandler as a man who lost his family on September 11th and hasn’t recovered from his grief. Cheadle plays a former college roommate who bumps into Sandler’s character and becomes determined to help him deal with his loss.

Of course this isn’t funnyman Sandler’s first time tackling drama. In 2002 he got Oscar buzz for his sad, beleaguered performance in the critically acclaimed movie ‘Punch Drunk Love’. In 2004 he got serious again opposite Tea Leoni and Paz Vega in ‘Spanglish’. But a grief stricken character like the one in ‘Reign O’er Me’ this could take Adam’s serious acting career to an entirely different level.

Binder wrote the script and Sony Pictures is reportedly interested in acquiring the rights to it. Attaching the big names of Sandler and Cheadle to ‘Reign’ will likely only make the property more attractive to them. Adam Sandler in 'Punch-Drunk Love'
