Staunton helps Swank teach teens

Imelda Staunton in \'Vera Drake\'
Imelda Staunton has moved on from championing abortion to teaching racial tolerance. She's been cast opposite Hilary Swank in the upcoming Paramount Pictures/MTV Production 'Freedom Writers' according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Last year, Staunton was Oscar nominated for her work in 'Vera Drake', a heavy movie about abortion. The combination of Staunton and Swank in a single film may not get many laughs, but count on plenty of Academy Awards attention.
'Freedom Writers' is the story of a teacher (played by Hilary Swank) who teaches at a gang-ridden high school in California. She struggles to teach English to a class of racially diverse teens who don't want to listen. Imelda Staunton will play one of Swank's colleagues.
The movie is being directed by Richard LaGravenese. His last film was a documentary co-directed with Ted Demme, examining the 70's as a turning point in American cinema called 'A Decade Under the Influence'.
Also joining the cast of 'Freedom Writers' is Scott Glenn and R&B singer Mario. No word yet on whether Mario will remake the hit Coolio song "Gangsta's Paradise" for the soundtrack. He should consider it.
