Reubens returns to Pee Wee

By Joshua Tyler Nov 2, 2005, 19:05 GMT

Paul Reubens’ career has been up and down and up and down again over the years, but now he says he wants to return to the Pee Wee character that made him famous.

During a recent Q&A session with fans, internet rumor site AICN says Reubens talked a little about reviving the character and confirmed what we’ve heard for awhile now, that he has two Pee Wee movie scripts written and ready to go.

Speaking about the two screenplays, Reubens claimed that one of the two scripts actually has a producer attached to it. The story, he says, would have Pee Wee on a mission to rescue the kidnapped King of Cartoons. Hopefully, he’ll be smart enough to avoid hitchhiking with truckers this time around. Paul describes this first script as being closer to an extension of his critically acclaimed Saturday morning kids show, “Pee Wee’s Playhouse”.

The second script is the riskier one, forget about it being for kids. It opens with Pee Wee getting out of prison, and follows him as he becomes a lumberjack and then a famous singer. Once he finds fame, Pee Wee turns on his fans. Actually, it sounds nothing like a Pee Wee movie, and you’ve got to wonder why he’s intent on putting that particular character into such a weird, potentially adult oriented movie. Why not create a new avatar for yourself Paul?

Will Pee wee still wear his grey suit and bowtie? Paul says yes, but whether or not he’ll get the opportunity to do it is something else entirely. After a brief resuscitation following his role as The Spleen in the superhero parody ‘Mystery Men’, Reubens’ career has flat-lined again amidst legal troubles and alleged sexual perversion. He’s been doing a little animation voice work, but his last movie role was way back in 2001 as part of the movie ‘Blow’.
