Is Disney on the verge of buying Pixar?

Pixar's split with Disney was public, and by now we all know the details. Pixar and Disney weren't able to come to terms, and now Pixar is going their own way… leaving their previous titles like Toy Story and The Incredibles in Disney's clutches.

But maybe the two animation giants aren't done with each other. ABC, a subsidiary of Disney has already been strengthening their relationship with Pixar's parent company Apple, headed by Steve Jobs. ABC has made episodes of "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" available for download via Apple's new video service. Now, Apple website MacDailyNews.com suggests that not only may the two giants be getting back together, but Disney may be on the verge of buying Pixar outright. They won't settle just for distributing this time.

In their words, "Mr. Jobs would consider a sale at the right price." Is Disney willing to pay the company's market value of $5.9 billion? Disney already owns their entire movie catalogue, so it's not exactly like that'll be part of the attraction. I think it's obvious what they're waiting for… a little movie called Chicken Little.

Chicken Little opens this weekend. How the movie does will no doubt play a large part in where Disney goes from here. If it fails, they'll have to acknowledge they can't go it on their own, that they need Pixar if they're going to continue to be players in animation. If it succeeds, then Disney may get it in their heads that their future is set and we'll probably never hear anything about this again.

The talks are still happening at secret, and reportedly Disney hasn't even made an offer yet, so don't take this too seriously for now. Still, a merger possibility this big is worth keeping an eye on.

I'm sorry, what's sensationalized about it? If you'd care to elaborate, perhaps your complaint could be discussed.

I fail to see how a possible merger between the industry's two biggest animation giants is not a legitimate story. Not only legitimate, but rather important.

This is a story we'll definitely be watching closely.

I really want Chicken Little to do well, I'd like to see Disney return to the quality animation they were once capable of. But I saw the film last weekend... and wasn't impressed.
