What Just Happened to De Niro
By Joshua Tyler Oct 27, 2005, 21:36 GMT
Robert De Niro is taking a break from his late-career tendency towards wacky parodies of himself to tackle more worthy subject matter. He’ll star in the Barry Levinson directed movie ‘What Just Happened’ according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Funded by flamboyant Dallas Mavericks’ basketball team owner Mark Cuban, Todd Wagner, and De Niro’s own Tribeca Productions, the movie will shoot with a $25 million budget. It’ll be produced by 2929 Productions.
In the movie, De Niro plays real life writer-producer Art Linson in the story of a desperate movie producer struggling to hang on to his career and even his dignity in the face of monumental Hollywood humiliation. The real life Mr. Linson’s credits are impressive, with films like ‘Heat’ and ‘Fight Club’ on his resume. Levinson will try to use Linson’s struggle to capture the reality of Hollywood.
As you might expect in a movie about the business, the pic will be filled with big name cameos. Sean Penn and others will pop up in ‘What Just Happened alongside De Niro.
