Infamous director Uwe Boll keeps right on working, even though his box office receipts tell us no one is watching. His next videogame to movie translation may be his most volatile yet. In a press release sent out today, game developer Running With Scissors announced that they’ve hired Boll to develop a film based on their game “Start firing those AK-47s into the air". Self-labeled as “the world's most dangerous software company”, Running With Scissors has cultivated a reputation of moral irresponsibility. ‘Postal’ is a culmination of that attitude, a violent, vicious game panned by critics, shunned by gamers, blacklisted by retailers, and even outlawed in some cases. Because of the controversy that already surrounds their projects, they think Doctor Uwe Boll is a perfect fit. “Boll is the perfect producer-director to make ‘Postal’”, says Running With Scissors CEO Vince Desi. “He understands the subject matter and has an appreciation and affinity for controversy and political incorrectness. ‘Postal’ has always been about reason and insanity, violence and motivation; producer-director Uwe Boll is simply the right guy to bring that vision to the screen." Despite opposition, the game has sold over a million units since it’s release in 1997. It’s also thrived as a counter-culture licensing vehicle, plastered on mugs, thongs, and t-shirts. The Uwe Boll helmed film is set to start shooting some time in 2006 or 2007, but Boll isn’t taking off on his own. "Running With Scissors will be creatively involved in this film," Desi vows, "from casting to the script." German moviemaker Uwe Boll has become almost infamous since the release of his first high profile movie ‘House of the Dead’ in 2003. Reviled by critics and audiences alike, his movies aren’t just bad, they’re also spectacularly unsuccessful. ‘Alone in the Dark’ only compounded his track record of failure when it was released to the sound of empty theaters in 2005. His next movie ‘BloodRayne’ is (as all his movies are) based on a videogame, and sports a cast of big names like Michael Madsen, Michelle Rodriguez, and Ben Kingsley. Early reviews, as you might expect, have not been stellar.
