Hollywood is still singing and dancing in the long, long shadow of 2002's 'Chicago'. This fall we'll see a big screen version of the musical 'Rent', but there are at least a half dozen more still in production. The latest musical to get rolling is a theatrical version of 'Hairspray'
Variety reports that after a long search, New Line Cinema has brought in Adam Shankman to direct and choreograph a film version of the well-known Broadway musical. Shankman is replacing departed co-directors Jerry Mitchell and Jack O'Brien. This is Shankman's first real foray into plot-singing, this past year he's been busy wrapping up a sequel to 'Cheaper by the Dozen' with Steve Martin. Once 'Dozen 2' finishes, he'll get to work with 'Hairspray' screenwriter Leslie Dixon and composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman (writers of the original Broadway score) on his new film.
Casting rumors have been circulating for awhile now on the project. Long considered to be a the frontrunner for the movie's lead role, Edna Turnblad, is John Travolta. Queen Latifah may also be in the running for the role of Motormouth Maybelle, because of her past association with Shankman.
