Foster's Flightplan takes her to number 1

After racking up an impressive per-screen-average last weekend in limited release, Tim Burton's 'Corpse Bride' was the odds on favor to blow the doors off this weekend's number one, U.S. box office spot as it expanded into wide release. Instead, the film proved that a high per-screen-average doesn’t mean much when you're only playing in five theaters. 'Corpse Bride' managed a solid $20 million and the number two spot in its first wide release weekend, but couldn't compete with the power of Jodie Foster's new lost child thriller 'Flightplan'.

Audiences turned out to the tune of a chunky $24 million three-day take for 'Flightplan' giving it the week's number one spot. The week's other big debut, the surprisingly un-hated Bow Wow roller skating movie 'Roll Bounce' made a respectable showing with an $8,000,000 million gross in the number four spot, behind last week's number one 'Just Like Heaven'.

In limited release, David Cronenberg's 'A History of Violence' arrived in a scant fourteen theaters and landed well outside the week's top ten, but still managed a cool half-million dollars. As 'Corpse Bride' did last week, 'History' pulled in a really impressive per-screen-average of $36,000, but there's no way to know if that'll translate into equally big numbers once it gets a wider audience next weekend. Not quite as successful in their first appearances were Roman Polanski's 'Oliver Twist' and the Johnny Knoxville vehicle 'Daltry Calhoun'. 'Twist' pulled in a mediocre $69,000 dollars in a five theater release and 'Calhoun' barely registered at all with a meager $7,400 take in fourteen theaters.
