Bettany plays the Joker

Throw this in the wild rumor category, but often reliable website Batman-On-Film is reporting that casting has already begun for the role of Joker in the next Batman movie, and there are only two candidates. According to them, the two men under consideration are Paul Bettany and Australian actor Lachy Hulme.

Bettany’s star has risen rapidly in the past few years, and after a memorable appearance in the Heath Ledger movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’ as a frequently nude Geoffrey Chaucer, he’s gone on to give critically acclaimed performances in fantastic movies like ‘Master and Commander’, ‘A Beautiful Mind’, and ‘Dogville’. Bettany is next slated to play a villain in the upcoming movie adaptation of ‘The DaVinci Code’.

Lachy Hulme on the other hand is a bit more of an unknown. He landed a small part in ‘The Matrix Revolutions’, but that’s really the only movie of note in his resume. Bettany seems ideally suited to take on a disturbed character like Joker, but casting a lesser-known face could work as well.

Batman-On-Film claims screen tests will happen this fall, but hang on for some sort of official confirmation that the movie is actually happening before giving this particular rumor any credence.
