Haggis crashes Deauville's top honor

Paul Haggis’ critically acclaimed masterpiece ‘Crash’ arrived on DVD in the United States this week, but overseas it’s still hitting the festival circuit.

Sunday night it won top honors at the Deauville Film Festival, with writer-director Haggis taking home the Grand Prix for his powerful ensemble drama about racism and loneliness in Los Angeles. In its 31st year, Deauville is unique as the only international film festival devoted solely to American films. Perhaps it should be no surprise that it’s often poorly attended, since Americans can see American films Stateside, and the rest of the world gets quite enough of them in their theaters already as it is.

In competition with ‘Crash’ were a total of ten other movies including ‘On the Outs’ and ‘Keane’ which tied for the second place Jury Prize. The Canal Prize for documentaries went to another film that debuted months ago in the United States (though to little fanfare), Alex Gibney’s white collar crime documentary ‘Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room’.

Other winners included a screenplay award for Duncan Tucker’s transsexual dramedy ‘Transamerica’.
