Somewhere in the past decade or so film festivals stopped being celebrations of the art form and became massive auction houses where independent filmmakers could price out their work to the highest bidder. The 30th Toronto Film Festival kicked off last Thursday, and the bidding there has already been fierce.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Fox Searchlight Studios has been one of the biggest players at this year at the festival, and by Saturday they'd already nabbed newcomer Jason Reitman's (son of Ivan Reitman) much wanted satire 'Thank You For Smoking'. The film stars Aaron Eckhart as a tobacco lobby spokesman spinning propaganda for cigarettes while trying to remain a positive role model for his son.
Despite a $7 million offer from Paramount Classics, the 'Smoking' group reportedly opted for Fox Searchlight after concern about how stable the environment is over at Paramount Classics.
