Taylor and Cruise to get BAFTAs

Los Angeles - Elizabeth Taylor and Tom Cruise are to be honoured with prestigious BAFTA awards by the Los Angeles branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, it was announced Friday. Taylor, 72, a double Oscar winner, will receive the Britannia Award for artistic excellence by the LA branch in November. Tom Cruise will receive Bafta's Stanley Kubrick Britannia award for excellence in film, while Mike Newell will receive the John Schlesinger Britannia award for artistic excellence in directing. "To pay tribute to an international icon is Bafta/LA's duty and privilege, but to honour a British star of the national treasure status of Miss Taylor is a downright thrill," said Lary Dartnall, Bafta's Los Angeles chairman. © dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
