Unseen Movie Review: Jack and Jill
By Adam D. Nov 10, 2011, 23:27 GMT

The comedy focuses on Jack, a family man, who must deal with his twin sister, Jill, when she visits for Thanksgiving then won\'t leave. Adam Sandler will play both the Jack and Jill characters. ...more
Enouuuuuuuuuuuugh! How many more Adam Sandler films with silly premises must I sit through? They all seem to be the same. Adam finds a remote that controls his life. Adam has to pretend to be married to a man. Adam dates a woman who can never form any new memories.
And now, Adam is playing both himself and his twin sister in Jack and Jill. The film also stars Al Pacino, and as I think of it now, it would have been funnier to have Pacino play his sister complete with him yelling “Hoooooaaaaaaa.”
I find that most of the time his movies are elaborate set-ups for personal gain. Sure, he’s paid handsomely to appear in the movies but I’m talking more than just a $25 million check. His last wacky romp, Just Go With It was a pretty bad movie that really felt like an excuse for Adam to take his gang to Hawaii and have fun while filming there.
Grown Ups was so bad I actually asked both the theater manager and my mom who gives me allowance for my money back. Grown Ups was simply an excuse for Sandler to get his SNL buddies together and hang out at a cabin in the woods or a nearby six star hotel that puts mints on your pillow when you go to bed and when you wake up.
I think it’s time for people to rally together and let Adam know that yes, we like him. We like him very much. But we expect more from his movies. A lot more. Todd Phillips cranks out a film every year and most of those are pretty funny.
Sandler has a little more holding him back than Todd. His movies need to be rated PG because his audience is primarily teenage boys who can count the number of new hairs on their body, while Todd’s films can be so filthy GG Allin woke up in his grave saying “Wow.”
So how do we do this? Twitter? Is someone on Facebook or have Sandler’s home phone number? (That’s how we used to get in touch with people before texting and sexting were invented.) Adam just needs to step it up and give us better comedies without the dumb premises.
Dressing up in women’s clothing is so old Mickey Rooney is saying “You’re doing the ol’ dress up in women’s clothing gag? It’s classic.” And the Wayans brothers did it years ago in White Chicks, and in my humble opinion they were much more attractive than Adam as a woman.
The really sad part of Adam’s situation is that when he puts himself in good material he’s proven he can really act. I thought he was amazing in Punch Drunk Love. Even Funny People, which I felt was flawed since it had no real ending, had Adam shining as a great character actor.
This is not to say that he’ll be competing with Daniel Day-Lewis for roles, but I think in comedic films he can definitely hold his own.
The other problem is that he is not appearing in enough solid material to offset the crap he’s pushing our way. Funny People and Punch Drunk Love were two films over seven years, yet he manages to put out at least one, if not two, dopey comedies like Don’t Mess with the Zohan and Little Nicky a year.
I will not be seeing Jack and Jill this weekend and I might not even watch it when it ends up on Starz (of course that will depend on how many housewives shows from Bravo are eating up memory on my DVR).
But it’s time we all took a stand and said enough is enough Adam! We expect more from you! Now put down that whoopee cushion and go make a real funny comedy worthy of a SNL alum, something that Rob Schneider can aspire to.
