A job, a wife, a baby and no free time. I haven’t seen the films but based on what I’ve heard and know, we’ll see if the movie is worth it. It’s the UNSEEN MOVIE REVIEW.
Instead of spawning a sequel, some successful films are now being followed by prequels. I never really understood that logic. It’s sort of like eating soup after your dessert.
Underworld is currently releasing its third film, a prequel called Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Will Smith is developing a prequel to I Am Legend (Well who told Big Willie to kill himself at the end of the first one).
Prequels are a blatant attempt to make more money. Sequels continue an unknown story, but we already know what will happen in the prequels. The only exception that I can think of is Godfather 2 because the De Niro early years help shape the monster Pacino becomes.
The idea of creating a prequel for the Underworld series really doesn’t work because not only do we already know what has happened but we have actually seen a lot of it in flashbacks in the previous two films.
I have to admit I’ve always liked the Underworld movies. There’s nothing too complicated or innovative about them but they have always presented some decent action and entertainment. I like the idea of vampires and werewolves fighting each other with guns. I also like the idea of clowns being hunted by the F.B.I. but unfortunately no one has developed that movie yet.
Throwing in a cross breed (Scott Speedman’s character) to the Underworld takes the conflict to another level. The new film tells us how the war began (which like I mentioned if you saw the previous two films you already know) and does not have the Speedman character or the problems his existence creates. It also doesn’t have Keri Russell who along with Scott Foley would have made a kick ass Felicity reunion.
I also liked the look of the previous films, it was always dark and rainy and added a certain vibe to the lycan/ vampires feud. The first two films were directed by Len Wiseman, and I thought he did a pretty good job. I know the guy gets a lot of flack in the online movie community, and fans thought his take on Live Free or Die Hard was about as bad as Ed Wood’s film of his father’s sixty fifth birthday party. But I liked that movie too. There was nothing fancy about it but the action was solid and a car managed to bring down a helicopter.
Even so, Wiseman gets lumped in with Brett Ratner and McG as the guys who are destroying fan favorite series. I can understand the hatred for McG, I mean the guy actually uses the name McG on screen. That’s like telling people your nickname is your real name when they ask you what your name is. It’s also begging for a beating about the face, head, neck and chest area. I love when movies have a specific unique style, but honestly sometimes I like leaving my brain at the concession stand and watching people shoot guns and vampires eating werewolves. Sometimes I also like watching Hilary Duff movies, then crying and calling my girlfriends to ask them why the football captain won’t ask me out.
So while I think the new Underworld movie is a waste of time and clearly made to grab your hard earned cash in these economic woeful times, if nothing else presents itself this weekend (like changing a lot of poopie diapers, fixing the handle in the powder room toilet, or competing in the America’s Cup race) you might see me in line for Underworld: Rise of the Lycans in the hopes that I get to see some vampires getting their heads cut off.
